It was the year of 1911 when King-Emperor George V and Queen-Empress Mary landed on Indian soil and the monument you see below was erected to commemorate their landing.

Well, the arch you're seeing is a piece of beauty made up with basalt which is 85feets (26m) high and crafted in Indo-Saracenic style. the construction of the monument was completed in 1924. The Gateway was later used as a symbolic ceremonial entrance to India for Viceroys and the new Governors of Bombay.

The main architect who was behind getting the massive structure erected was George Wittet who combined the elements of the Roman triumphal arch and the 16th-century architecture of Gujarat. The design displays a blend of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. The arch is of Muslim style while the decorations are of Hindu style. The construction began on the monument in the year of 1911 and took 13 years to completely finish in the year of 1924.

It has a height of 26 meters and a diameter of 15 meters which is of the central dome.The Gateway of India is built from yellow basalt and reinforced concrete. The cost to build it was about $29,000 when it was built which was mostly borne by the Government Of India. Due to a paucity of funds, the approach road was never built and so the gateway stands at an angle to the road leading up to it.

The Gateway Of India is a symbolic monument which represents India and serves as a very popular tourist place as well as it also serves as an access to India through Mumbai.
