Darkside episode recap- Self-Awareness

in #msp-waves7 years ago (edited)

Darkside- where we ramble about psychology and the esoteric. Today's episode took a sharp left turn into psychology.

Highlights

If you want to skip the banter go to 6:05

Isaria and Shane got mad at me because I was in deepend and didn't realize they could not pull me into the radio show from there.

I managed to get on and then they disagreed on whether I was still in trouble or not (it was pretty adorable).

Then we bantered about the sound and the fact that I was making noise pouring my beer.

At 6:05 we mostly get down to business-there may or may not have been additional banter about robo-tripping and sucking a bottle of cough medicine. Isaria and I discussed Johari squares. Additionally, we talked about our experiences in therapy and whether they actually led to self-awareness. We also talked about the "blind box" portion of the Johari square, or what people are aware of that the self is not, and whether or not it was actually helpful to know those things.

I told a really embarrassing story about sarcasm and my misuse of it while hanging out with new friends at 25:50.

At 27:20 we discussed how to help people in their journey of self-awareness in a gentle and kind way, and reviewed the concepts of drawing appropriate boundaries. Assertive communication was also mentioned here, and how we can be more helpful in our relationships with others.

34:20 We talked about how situations and experience help you move certain aspects of yourself from the "blind" category into something that you're more aware of. I described an experience in college where a teacher did a bullying experiment with us as a class. She randomly went around yelling at us, and I dissolved into giggles the entire time. That was when I learned that I laugh when I'm uncomfortable.

39:55 Isaria explains how her empathic nature affects her teaching.

42:00 We talked about how to tell if a person lacks self-awareness.

44:36 We discussed how becoming defensive about feedback may be born from a lack of self-awareness, and this extended into critiques- how to accept them, how to give them, and when it's appropriate to do so.

49:14 We discussed being controlling and asked if being aware of being controlling was still a sign of self-awareness or a lack thereof.

I mentioned this quiz as a resource to help people get a better sense of self.

@Staceyjean wrote a great reflection post based on some of the ideas we have discussed on the show and her own experiences.

Isaria wrote a much more informative post about the Johari window.

We also mentioned @abigail-dantes great post about Existential Psychotherapy.
