Captain Mary Sue Goes Viral

in #movies5 years ago

I didn't want to say anything about it, but now that Brie Larson's latest publicity misstep (putting it mildly) has gone viral (again), and because she's going to be "the face" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I just have to.

As if the phantom of equal representation hasn't ruined enough films and franchises, Hollywood chooses to ignore the many disappointed and vocal fans. The MCU seems dead-set on joining the the growing list of beloved titles that are ruined by shoehorning in a "strong female character". I really don't get it. After Doctor Who, Star Trek Discovery, Ocean's 8, Ghostbusters 2016 and Star Wars, now the MCU to is infected with this politically correct equal-representation-virus. Now, although I think it's silly to believe that "equal representation" in films and series would somehow aid in the breaking of whatever glass ceiling, perceived or real, I normally wouldn't have a problem with this phenomenon, simply because I don't watch movies for their political messaging.

We watch movies because we want to escape the real world for a moment and want to be sucked in by the stories, the drama's, the trials and tribulations of the protagonists, join them on their journey to victory or redemption, feel with them when they fight through adversity and rejoice with them when they're successful in the end. And the gender of this protagonist is of no importance whatsoever; give us a good story and we don't care if were guided through it by a female or a male hero. Yet somehow there's this belief in Hollywood that we, the fans, are not comfortable with female heroes... I guess they forgot about Ellen Ripley from the Alien franchise, Sarah Connor from the Terminator films, Wonder Woman, Kathryn Janeway from Star Trek Voyager, "the bride" in Kill Bill... All beloved heroes in well received films, but somehow Marvel, and Brie Larson herself think they can claim a first on starring a female hero in a major title.

I have many problems with this forced political correctness, for many reasons, but for a movie, I just don't care; like I said, if the story is good, the political messaging would pass by unnoticed, because it wouldn't feel like like a message, like it's gotten through a rigorous test and got a "seal of approval" slapped on by some SJW committee that counts the number of white males, white females, males and females of color, LGBTQ characters... It's all so fake, manufactured and forced. And on top of that, the female characters in these new, approved movies are all empty, have no character arc and have no faults, no personal flaws to overcome; Rey from Star Wars, Michael Burnham from Star Trek Discovery, The Doctor from Dr. Who season 16 and now Carol Danvers from Captain America too, are all textbook Mary Sue's. It's like they're afraid to give these female characters any flaws, they have to be perfect in every way, and it needs to be clear that "they don't need no man to hold their hand."

BRIE LARSON HATES CHRIS HEMSWORTH! AVENGERS ENDGAME INTERVIEW - CAPTAIN MARVEL VS THOR!

Now Brie Larson, the actress that gave us our latest Mary Sue, Captain Marvel, has turned an already disappointed fandom against her, with her public statements. She first went viral on the internet when she said during some award ceremony that she isn't interested in the opinion of "a 40 year old white man" about the movie A Wrinkle In Time. After the backlash she stated in several interviews that she just wants more diversity and doesn't have anything against white men. She also stated on several occasions that she sees her starring role in the MCU as a platform for her fight for equal representation, all the while claiming she is the first female hero, that she is breaking the glass ceiling here. Wonder Woman wasn't that long ago, now was it?

Captain Marvel, the movie, was mediocre at best; even Samuel L. Jackson's performance wasn't great. But what made it worse than mediocre, was the blatant SJW message forced into the whole story. The great enemy that she has to overcome in order to realize her full potential, is none other than the Patriarchy... She has constant flashbacks of men in her life telling her how she's worth nothing. When she wants to become a fighter pilot, some man tells her "You know why they call it a Cock-pit, don't you?" Even her father is a bad, bad man, as he screams angrily at her after she has a carting accident, when any normal father would be concerned with her safety first. And like all Mary Sues before her, she gets her superpower for free; the conclusion is that she was great all along and that she just had to believe in herself... And she's immediately a master in using her power. Remember how Iron Man struggled to learn how to fly? How Spider Man fell flat on his face a thousand times before he got the hang of swinging from building to building? Not Captain Mary Sue; she just closes her eyes for a second and immediately flies better and faster than Superman ever could. Remember how Jedi needed years of training before mastering the arts? Not Rey, she just knows everything and beats everybody out of nowhere.

These are bad characters in bad stories and boring films. It's already announced that Captain Marvel will be the face of the MCU going forward after Endgame, and as things are going now, I'm afraid that's another beloved franchise gone to waste. To be fair to Brie Larson, I'm not only going to link the couple of seconds that were cut out of context (see the video above); that makes her look even worse. This is the full 8 minute segment of the interview for you to "enjoy". It's clear to me that the other cast-members aren't really fans of Brie, to say the least. Let's hope that this agenda won't ruin Endgame like it ruined Star Wars...

I never liked her or her Captain Marvel. I'd be happier if Rogue finally came around and absorbed her powers.
