🎬Queen of the South - Story of the woman emergence at the helm of the drug cartel - REVIEW

in #movies7 years ago

In 2015 we were fascinated by Narcos. Two seasons are over and we are waiting for new episodes. But nature abhors a vacuum and we get new television drama-thriller series - Queen of the South.

Queen of the South has two seasons. The first one contains 13 episodes, the second has 8 episodes (it's not over yet).

American series is an adaptation of the telenovela La Reina del Sur and the book written by Arturo Pérez-Reverte.

The series tells about a young woman - Teresa Mendoza, who is involved in a drug trafficking. We'll find out her path from becoming a drug courier to the helm of the drug cartel in Europe. The piquancy of the story is attached to the fact that the book is based on life Sandra Ávila Beltrán - a Mexican drug cartel leader. She's 56 now. Here's her photo:

The second name of Sandra Ávila Beltrán is "La Reina del Pacífico" (The Queen of the Pacific). She got this nickname for creating new drug path from Mexico to California along the Pacific coast.

Interesting enough, ha? Let's get back to the subject at hand.

I will talk about my impressions from the first season because the second one is not over yet.

We used to the fact that the heads of drug cartels are harsh men, but women are right behind them, and in the "Queen of the South" we got two powerful woman.

1. Teresa Mendoza (starring Alice Braga)

So, Teresa lived a luxurious life with her boyfriend, who worked as a cocaine carrier. However nothing lasts forever. The guy was fooled and killed. The same fate awaited for Teresa. She was able to escape with a ledger that contains valuable information about the drugs transport. So, the heads of the cartel - Camila and Epifanio Vargas - found it out. Each of them is struggling to get Teresal first - Epifanio in order to kill, Camila in order to get compromising on her husband.

2. Dona Camila Vargas (starring Veronica Falcon)

She deserves special attention. Veronica Falcon is so organic in her role.

Camila represents the interests of the cartel in the States. That is an extremely stately and influential woman, makes everyone silenced at a glance. She is the embodiment of authority and charisma. You believe Camila and though she does not always show her emotions, you feel them even through the cold mask on her face.

Resume:

The first season is so dynamic that you do not notice inconsistencies and mistakes. Teresa always runs, she hardly avoids death every time. Her life is on the line. The plot keeps in suspense and you watch the series after series, wondering what situation fate will put it in. It would seem that it could be worse? But "worse" immediately comes.

A special feature of the series that at the most difficult moment before Teresa appears her future "Teresa" - a beautiful, business woman, who calms her down and motivates her.

On the one hand, this is an interesting approach to the story and on the other hand we know what will be at the end (but not fully).

The series "Queen of the South" is very catchy. But Teresa often irritates and behaves illogically. Perhaps in the process we will see the development of her character into a confident woman. But there is a strong and interesting story that makes you stare at the screen without going cross-eyed.

Raitings:

Rotten Tomatoes 69%
IMDb 7.7/10

The drug dealers theme is trending now and I think we'll get enough movies and TV series on this topic in future.
