The best korean movie of this year : A TAXI DRIVER(2017)
I don't know how many of you watch foreign movies, most of us are limited to their native language movies or any top Hollywood ones. Trust me, you're missing a lot, there's lot of great movies that are worth of your every single minute of it and this Korean movie by jang hoo's " A Taxi driver" is one of them.
This movie is based on the true political events that took place in 1980's of gwangju uprising and also showcasing the daring attempts of a German reporter along with his cab driver.
It is more of like a tribute to the reporter "Jürgen Hinzpeter" ( who is referred as peter in the movie) and the people who were in that movement,specially the little known taxi driver.
STORY
Movie starts out with the daily struggle of a taxi driver, who is a widower and trying his best to earn and be the best for his daughter. This character is played by the legendary actor Sang hoo Who brings out the best emotions of a character.
He is 4 months behind the rent, he needs to take care of his daughter and desperately in need of money. He is just normal people like all of us. Trying to earn and make a living and can be selfish and selfless to the core whenever the situation needs.
In order to the seize the opportunity to earn more, he steals another driver's fare, who happens to be german reporter reaching for the Gwangju to cover the martial law and violence happening there.
From this point of movie, tone of the movies changes from slice of life to a tensed political. Which involves protests, martial law, soldier behaving ruthless to the people and vigorous attempt of a taxi driver to bypass the security or else he wont get paid.
It's much more than the characters and events, it is more of human nature and struggle for the freedom against the oppresion. Which this movie justifies it by portraying it the right way.
Considering the true event and characters, the director has done a brilliant job executing it without making it look like too fictitious or a boring documentary type. It's a perfect balance for entertainment and facts about the history.
Which serves a good emotional experience for the audience.
Even me being an outsider, unknown to this country or event, was google searching about this event and sympathize with the people involved.
That's how a powerful movie should be, effective and stays with you for a while after watching it.
