As an Italian user I am, and as a great lover of cinema, I could only start with the most important Italian contemporary filmmaker:
Paolo Sorrentino .
For non-Italians Sorrentino will certainly be known for his masterpiece: The Great Beauty. Winner of the 2014 Oscar for Best Foreign Film, The Great beauty remains a shining example of Sorrentino's poetry. A man who loves to tell by images, by visual metaphors rather than words and didactic dialogues. Dialogues that always remain very effective, cryptic and often incomprehensible. It is a distinctive feature of the Italian director's filmography. His ambition has always been to tell the inaudible, to find the profound meaning in things without ever openly taking sides. In "La Grande Bellezza" he was able to combine breathtaking images with the decadence of the most beautiful city in the world, impossible to decipher in its beauty but also in its unfailing indecency. Still Rome, the Vatican shore has served as a backdrop to another of its greatest international successes: The Young Pope . This time, Sorrentino has shown his talent on the small screen, on television thanks to the collaboration between HBO and SKY Italia. Protagonist Jude Law in the role of a very young Pope. Also here Sorrentino lives of images and thanks to them and to the skill of Jude Law he manages to outline the most hidden instincts, weaknesses of the human being and at the same time to highlight its virtues. Sorrentino is a director of eternal contrast. He loves to talk about beauty through ugliness and ugliness through beauty, virtues like vices and vices as virtues. Ai non italiani Sorrentino sarà certamente noto per il suo capolavoro: La grande Bellezza. Vincitore del premio Oscar 2014 nella categoria Miglior Film Straniero, la grande bellezza resta un fulgido esempio della poetica di Sorrentino. Un uomo che ama raccontare per immagini, per metafore visive più che per parole e didascalici dialoghi. Dialoghi che restano comunque sempre molto efficaci, criptici e spesso incomprensibili. E' un tratto distintivo della filmografia del regista italiano. La sua ambizione è sempre stata di raccontare l'inenarrabbile, di trovare il senso profondo nelle cose senza schierarsi mai apertamente. Ne "La Grande Bellezza" ha saputo combinare immagini mozzafiato alla decadenza della città più bella del mondo, impossibile da decifrare nella sua bellezza ma anche nella sua immancabile indecenza. Sempre Roma, sponda Vaticano ha fatto da sfondo ad un altro suo grandissimo successo internazionale: The Young Pope. Stavolta Sorrentino ha dato prova del suo talento sul piccolo schermo, in televisione grazie alla collaborazione fra HBO e SKY Italia. Protagonista Jude Law nei panni di un giovanissimo Papa. Anche qui Sorrentino vive di immagini e grazie ad esse ed alla bravura di Jude Law riesce a tratteggiare le più recondite pulsioni, debolezze dell'essere umano e al tempo stesso ad evidenziarne le virtù. Sorrentino è un regista di eterno contrasto. Ama raccontare il bello attraverso il brutto ed il brutto attraverso il bello, virtù come vizi e vizi come virtù. Non tutti lo apprezzano proprio perchè difficile da comprendere, difficile da decifrare.

An impossible undertaking in a country where a man like Berlusconi, convicted of corruption, under investigation for the mafia, under investigation for other criminal and financial crimes, has dominated the political scene for about 25 years. Paolo Sorrentino managed to direct a wonderful film without taking sides, at least apparently. He managed to give us back the portrait of Silvio Berlusconi man, husband, politician and entrepreneur. Ruthless analysis and as always thin and elegant signed Sorrentino.

We will be delighted to admire each of his shots and consider ourselves enthusiastic spectators of his incomprehensible and wonderful art.

Paolo Sorrentino nasce a Napoli nel 1970. Chi conosce Napoli sa che essa è una città contraddittoria, che vive di contrasti incredibili. La malavita purtroppo si fa largo in un paese stupendo fatto di persone stupende, calorose e generose. A Napoli c'è sempre il sole, il mare saluta i suoi abitanti ogni mattina eppure i napoletani non sempre riescono a regalare alla propria città le soddisfazioni che meriterebbe.
Non è difficile immaginare che l'anima di Sorrentino sia stata forgiata proprio tra quei vicoli, dove si viveva della bellezza delle strade, dei palazzi, dei monumenti ma al tempo stesso bisognava stare in guardia dai pericoli di piccoli criminali e di persone non sempre civilissime.
Nascere a Napoli deve per forza segnarti, ti resta addosso, sotto pelle, eppure non è stata solo quella l'influenza palpabile che troviamo nelle opere di Sorrentino.
Chi ama il cinema italiano, quello che dominava il mondo negli anni '60, avrà sicuramente notato quanto Fellini sia presente nei film di Sorrentino. Le inquadrature, i personaggi, l'estetica, la sperimentazione, l'universalità del racconto. Sorrentino richiama Fellini nelle sue opere ed in un certo senso ne continua il lavoro.
Un lavoro iniziato nel 2001 con "l'uomo in più" e che oggi continua anche in tv. A gennaio 2020 arriverà il sequel di "The Young Pope" che avrà come titolo The New Pope. Un cast ancora più internazionale e di livello altissimo con John Malkovich, Sharon Stone, Marylin Manson che affiancheranno lo stesso Jude Law in questa nuova promettente stagione. Ha fatto molto discutere in Italia l'ultimo film di Sorrentino che aveva osato scrivere 2 film sulla storia di Silvio Berlusconi. Un'impresa impossibile in un paese dove un uomo come Berlusconi, condannato per corruzione, indagato per mafia, indagato per altri reati penali e finanziari, ha dominato la scena politica per 25 anni circa. Paolo Sorrentino è riuscito a dirigere un film stupendo senza schierarsi, almeno apparentemente. E' riuscito a restituirci il ritratto di Silvio Berlusconi uomo, marito, politico e imprenditore. Alla fine del film di lui restavano solo macerie, quelle stesse macerie che sono piombate sull'Italia a causa del suo governo, del suo malcostume, della sua spregiudicatezza. Sorrentino attraverso l'immagine dell'uomo più potente d'Italia ha voluto denunciare tutto il popolo italiano, capace di adorare un uomo povero, vile e privo di ogni attenzione verso la cosa pubblica. Era riuscito a fare lo stesso con un altro film con protagonista un uomo politico. Il Divo vinse la palma d'oro a Cannes, e lo fece attraverso una storia incentrata su Giulio Andreotti. Analisi spietata e come sempre sottile ed elegante firmata Sorrentino.
Ci Aspettano ancora tanti anni in compagnia del maestro del cinema italiano. Solo lui può sapere quali altre cose riuscirà ad immaginare, scrivere e disegnare con la sua telecamera.
