Sunday Movie: Judith of Bethulia
This is one of my favorite Bible stories. If you were raised Protestant you probably don't know the story of Judith, it was one of the books deleted from the Bible by Martin Luther. The movie was made in 1913-14 by D.W. Griffith. It was arguably the first feature length film ever made. Judith was the widow of Manasses one of the elders of Bethulia, a city between Babylon and Jerusalem. Holofernes was the general of Nebuchadnezzar's army on his way to sack Jerusalem. He lays siege to Bethulia on his way capturing their well and cutting off their access to food. Judith, in an attempt to save her people, seduces Holofernes and when the time to strike comes, she discovers that she has fallen in love. Will she save her people, or return to babylon a captive of the heart?
