Hello everyone and welcome to my review of Firebase, Oats Studios second short film released on their Youtube channel. First off I apologize for having the same photo twice at the beginning. On my last review, Rakka, the photo with the name of the movie on it didn't work for some reason, so in case that happens again, hopefully this will help. Anyway, the strangely named, Oats Studios, is a production company that makes experimental short films. It was created by Neil Blomkamp, a well known writer and director. He's made such films as District 9, Chappie, and Elysium. All those are sci-fi movies and the shorts he's making here are no different. This is volume 1 of Firebase, and can be viewed for free on Youtube. If people seem to like it and it gets positive attention, Neil will release volume 2, 3, etc. Or possibly make it into a full length feature film.

Where Rakka took place in the future, Firebase takes us back to the Vietnam war. We first see a group of soldiers tracking down some unknown enemy. Then as the action unfolds you will notice strange things happening that defy the laws of physics and nature. There is some kind of supernatural threat in the jungle of Vietnam that is wiping out entire military bases and it can't be stopped. It also turns the deceased soldiers into these strange creatures that have an insect type of look to them. I really don't want to give away too much of what happens in Firebase, it's best if you just see for yourself.

This short film is only about 25 minutes long, and just to make it clear this is not a complete movie, it has no ending. Hopefully if more people seem to like it, the studio will make the remaining volumes to finish out the story that is started in volume 1. This is my favorite one of the three shorts I've seen so far, it has a Predator or Apocalypse Now type of vibe to it that most fans of sci-fi or horror should find enjoyable. The acting is good in it, the special effects and CGI are great, but most of all the story of this one was the most compelling for me. I love movies with strange monsters like, Predator, Alien, even The Thing, and Neil Blomkamp must as well because all of his movies seem to have one. The creatures are the focal point of all of these short films and they're all well done. Giving that this is not a complete movie it's a little hard to give it a grade, but for what I've seen so far of Firebase I give it a....
