The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind (Movie Review)

Hi friends, i just saw a movie The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind", a true life story and a very inspirational one at that directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor. It portrayed an African setting in Kasungu, Malawi. The movie starred Maxwell Simba as William Kamkwamba, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Trywell Kamkwamba, Aïssa Maïga as Agnes Kamkwamba, Lily Banda as Annie Kamkwamba, Joseph Marcell as chief and many others. The movie depicts how a change in situations affects people, family relationships and everyday struggles. It tells the story of a young boy William Kamkwamba who comes from a family line of farmers. A very smart and skillful boy who handles electronic repairs well. Having a father who was ready to send him to school until bad turn of events which was as a result of the bad decisions of some of the villagers and the government neglecting them. It crippled their source of income and their crops which was how they fed. In bid to save his family and village from drought and famine, William came up with a means to power an electric water pump which he got from the junkyard. Through all odds he was able to provide a solution for his family and village to farm successfully.

The movie is an inspirational one, with very strong characters. The characters were very engaging, i could hardly take my eyes off when Ejiofor Chiwetel was on screen or Aïssa Maïga. Ejiofor as a father who wants education for his children but has to struggle to also keep up with putting food on the table and making sure the village is not put to ruin. Aïssa has a virtuous woman who is in support of her husband and loves her children so much. Even when things became tough and her daughter Annie (Lily Banda) started to disrespect her father which is her husband was as a result of no food she made sure to reprimand her telling her that even if it means her cutting her arm, she was not going to let her children starve. There is also Maxwell Simba, a very bright young boy who was already skillful in the use of electronic devices. He became determined in the face of impossibility, putting his creative mind to work which in turn brought a solution to his village. Also, there is Lily Banda as Annie, William sister. She also could not further her education but was in love with a school teacher. When the family faced the heat of hunger she ran away from home with her boyfriend to another village
,according to her "one less mouth to feed"

Credit should be given to Simba, whose lead performance was exceptionally amazing. Delving from the character of a playful young boy to a serious and determined one, who wants to rid his village of hunger. Also, he was not limited to the fact that he was not given as much education as he should have gotten. Here the creative mind of a young boy was put in play. In our present time, a lot of excuses are being made using education. "I did not succeed because i did not go to school" meanwhile a lot of people have been able to turn their situations around with their skills and their
creative mind. Also the choice of language was intriguing and very refreshing to see, just listening to the actors relate with it is applauding going between English and Chichewa but mainly Chichewa a language spoken in much of southern,southeast and East Africa.

I enjoyed every bit of the movie, i couldn't help but feel emotional in some scenes. I mean it portrayed the real struggles in family and how they are affected by it personally. How in many parts of the world people have been neglected by their own government to fend for themselves and many more. I strongly recommend this movie for all, it's not a movie you see on your screen everyday. If you are worried about the language, then don't because it is subtitled.
