"Lost in Space" : Worth blasting off with

This is not the first time the Robinson family has been lost in outer space. Lost in Space 2018 is a remake of the 1965 series of the same name.The same characters, similar situations, aimed primarily at a teenage audience. The original series survived three seasons with a total of 83 episodes and was canceled in 1968 due to high production costs. After 30 years, the Robinsons went into space again, this time in film format. The 1998 film Lost in Space, which stars including William Hurt, Gary Oldman and Matt LeBlanc, proved to be profitable, but not enough to speak of a possible sequel.

The next attempt to return the Robinsons to space was made in 2004. The pilot of The Robinsons: Lost in Space was commissioned by The WB Television Network, and John Woo himself sat in the director's chair! However, it didn't get any further than the pilot, but the Lost in Space set worked its way in the Battlestar Galactica series as the star cruiser Pegasus. And finally, in 2014, Legendary Television announced work on the next sequel, written by Matt Sazama and Burke Sharpless. In late 2015, the project was acquired by Netflix.

If you are familiar with the fiction of the classic era, then you know very well what awaits you in Lost in Space. The Robinson family, falling from one difficult situation to another, will emerge with honor from all trials, showing the wonders of survival, the ability to work in a team and use their intelligence and scientific achievements to solve a variety of problems. As soon as the Robinsons pull out their ship and their daughter frozen in the ice, an aggressive alien robot will fall on their head, then evil leeches will devour all the fuel, a volcano will erupt, a black hole will appear in the vicinity of a cute planet, etc. etc. Without stopping, without respite, from series to series. Given the format of the show, there is no doubt that the Robinsons will go through all the hardships without any loss in personnel. And not a single chicken (this is important!) Will suffer.

Lost in Space is a typical teenage fiction in the Heinlein style. What pleases me is the conscientious emphasis on technology and scientific approach. Scientists, engineers and technicians in this series are the main characters, without whom the salvation of the Robinsons and the rest of the colonists is simply impossible. They do not give up, they are looking for non-standard solutions. Accordingly, everything related to technology, Jupiter landing modules, Chariot all-terrain vehicles, and other equipment has been made in Lost in Space at an impressive level. The "Chariots" were especially successful, it would be interesting to know on the basis of which cars the design of these cars was created.

Another plus of Lost in Space is the Robinson family itself. The head of the family, Maureen Robinson is an aerospace engineer, always confident in her own strength, reliability of technology, the importance of planning and training. It is this strong woman who sets the tone for the entire series. She can, of course, allow herself a second of weakness, but when it comes to the safety of her children, and in Lost in Space it is almost always about it, Maureen cannot be stopped.

Former military man John Robinson is trying to re-establish contact with his children and wife, with whom, due to the nature of his work, he had very little contact before leaving. Judy, daughter of Maureen from her first marriage, the eldest of the Robinson children, a certified physician at the age of 19, a collected and purposeful girl. Laughing and sharp-eyed 16-year-old Penny Robinson, who dreams of becoming a writer, is the soul of a family. Well, 11-year-old Will Robinson clearly inherited his mother's intelligence, some of the most important ideas that allowed the colonists to escape, belong to him. In addition, it is he who is friends with a huge alien killer robot, which, of course, will save everyone at the very last moment.

The Lost in Space script is, by and large, a set of cliches from classic fiction, there is no question of any deep elaboration of the characters here. The main idea - the family above all, the family will never leave you, is also quite trivial. Nevertheless, Lost in Space looks very good. It is dynamic, you will definitely not be bored here, and terribly cute. Perhaps the only big drawback of the series is the weak negative character who succeeds only thanks to the innate gullibility and naivety of the Robinsons.

The first season of Lost in Space ends with a harsh cliffhanger. Netflix hasn't said anything yet about the likelihood of a second season coming out, but personally, I really hope the series will be renewed. After all, youth space fiction is very important, if it weren't for it, we wouldn't have dreamers like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Robert Bigelow. I'm sure they all watched the original Lost in Space and Star Trek at one time!
