Let's Put A Smile On That Face

I am not so sure about this one, somethings are better left unknown, the Joker being one of them.

Here's why I'm not all that excited to see this movie, and it starts with a question, what scars most people the most? The answer is pretty easy, the unknown, that which you can not define or put a face to, when you can not quantify why something is what it is, or does what it does. These features have been used throughout story telling since the beginning of time, and if there was one thing that has never changed since the creation of the Joker back in 1940 by by Bill Finger, Bob Kane, and Jerry Robinson. It is that we don't know where he comes from, and what made him the way he is, what could have happened to him that made him this way? It would be like understanding pure evil, and the fact that it remained a mystery is what gave the such depth and uncertainty to the character.

When you tell an origin story, you essentially remove that veil of the unknown and then add a human element to something that scared you, and by doing so you remove the fear. So the villain becomes just another person, but the larger implication is that it undoes what has been upheld for almost 80 years. All because someone wants to make a buck.
