Dark Crystal - Age of Resistance

Dark Crystal - The Resistance is a TV series from Netflix and is the prequel to the 1982 film by Jim Henson and Frank Oz, becoming in the 80s certainly one of the most important films among the many science fiction and innovative films from the point of view of the realization. In fact all the characters in the film are marionettes, skilfully moved by skilled hands, and together with the ability of the director, they managed to hide the threads and mechanisms that move the characters.

Watching the TV series it would seem that it is all a special effect am actually the use of computerized technology and visual effects is really reduced to a minimum. The story tells the story of the Gelfling, little elf-like men, with long hair and ears but very minute in stature, who will soon take the field against the evil Skeksis, creatures who had promised to protect the Crystal, source of energy of the whole kingdom of Thra.

The Gelflings will be accompanied by Aughra, the witch protector of the Crystal, deceived by the Skeksis, who gave her a planetarium to study the stars, obtaining custody of the crystal itself while the witch devoted herself to the study of the planets, she is determined to all the costs of saving it from their clutches. The most fearsome of the Skeksis, the Hunter, is hired by others of his kind to capture Jen, the Gelfling who discovered the true intentions of the evil creatures,

The Skeksis, fearing their own death, exploiting the power of the Crystal, sacrificing the life of the Gelfling, to obtain a long-life serum, stealing energy from the Crystal itself and creating a dark force that slowly devours the whole kingdom of Thra.

The struggle between good and evil is constant in the stories of Henson and Freud and basically at the end of the TV series there is no real winner. Indeed, where it seems that the evil has been defeated, in reality it has received new life and this will be the base on which the film Dark Crystal evolves. Given the success it is very likely that there is a follow-up to the TV series, the cues would be really many but today there are no communications from Netflix.

The narration is very fluent and Henson's mind gave birth to a myriad of animals and strange and funny creatures. The profound theme of the cycle of life described in the books and reproduced in the TV series and in the film indicates how everything flows and that the end of life, from whatever event is generated, is only the beginning of a new cycle, higher and more intense . Escaping from death, although it can give an earthly pleasure, is an impossible passage to avoid, indeed the more it is accepted, the less painful the transition will be.

Dark Crystal - La Resistenza è una serie TV targata Netflix ed è il prequel del film del 1982 di Jim Henson e Frank Oz, diventando negli anni '80 sicuramente una delle pellicole più importanti tra i numerosi film di fantascienza ed innovative dal punto di vista della realizzazione. Infatti tutti i personaggi del film sono delle marionette, mosse abilmente da mani sapienti, e assieme all'abilità della regia, sono riusciti a nascondere i fili ed i meccanismi che muovo i personaggi.

Guardando la serie TV sembrerebbe che sia tutto un effetto speciale am in realtà l'utilizzo delle tecnologia e di effetti visivi computerizzati è davvero ridotto al minimo. La storia narra le vicende dei Gelfling, piccoli omini simili ad elfi, dai lunghi capelli ed orecchie ma molto minuti di statura, che presto scenderanno in campo contro i malvagi Skeksis, creature che avevano promesso di proteggere il Cristallo, fonte di energia di tutto il regno di Thra.

I Gelfling saranno accompagnati da Aughra, strega protettrice del Cristallo, ingannata dagli Skeksis, i quali le regalarono un planetario per studiare le stelle, ottenendo in custodia l'affidamento del Cristallo stesso nel mentre la strega si dedicava allo studio dei pianeti, è decisa a tutti i costi di salvarlo dalle loro grinfie. Il più temibile degli Skeksis, il Cacciatore, viene assoldato dagli altri della sua specie affinchè catturi Jen, il Gelfling colui che ha scoperto le vere intenzione delle malvagie creature ,

Gli Skeksis, temendo la propria morte, sfruttando il potere del Cristallo, sacrificando la vita dei Gelfling,per ottenere un siero di lunga vita, rubando energia al Cristallo stesso e creando una forza oscura che divora pian piano tutto il regno di Thra.

La lotta tra il bene ed il male è costante nei racconti di Henson e Freud e sostanzialmente al termine della serie TV non vi è un reale vincitore. Anzi, laddove sembra che il male sia stato sconfitto, in realtà ha ricevuto nuova vita e questo sarà la base su cui si evolve il film Dark Crystal. Dato il successo è molto probabile che vi sia un seguito alla serie TV, gli spunti sarebbero davvero tanti ma a d oggi non ci sono comunicazioni da parte di Netflix.

La narrazione è molto scorrevole e la mente di Henson ha dato vita ad una miriade di animale e creature strane e buffe. La profonda tematica del ciclo della vita descritta nei libri e riprodotta nella serie TV e nel film indica come tutto scorra e che la fine della vita, da qualsiasi evento sia generato, è solo l'inizio di un nuovo ciclo, più elevato e più intenso. Fuggire dalla morte, sebbene possa dare un piacere terreno, è un passaggio impossibile da evitare, anzi più lo si accetta, meno doloroso sarà il trapasso.
