Lone Survivor is a United States war drama series of 2013 written and directed by Peter Berg based on Marcus Luttrell's Lone Survivor and Patrick Robinson. Lone Survivor film is a true story of the failure of US military operations in Afghanistan with the Red Wing Operation code. The operation was carried out in 2005 with the mission of capturing or killing senior Taliban commander, Ahmad Shah. Ahmad Shah and his troops killed about 20 people in a week.

The film Lone Survivor premiered at AFI Festival on November 12, 2013 and was released in the United States on December 25, 2016. The film received an average to positive review from critics.

Four members of the Navy SEAL team; Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Chief Corporal Marcus Luttrell (Mark Wahlberg), One Corporal Matthew Axelson (Ben Foster) and One Corporal Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch) depart from Bagram air base to a hill-encircled village has identified the existence of Ahmad Shah. They are already at the penalty spot to shoot Ahmad Shah who is physically possessed with no ears. However, the communication connection is interrupted so that no command confirmation is obtained.

While waiting for the shooting orders, there appeared three shepherds. Of course this is unexpected. America's troops can not help but catch on and argue about what they should do. The first alternative, killing the shepherds with the consequences of fluent duty, but making American troops outlaws. The second alternative, binding and leaving the shepherds is freezing to death or being eaten by wild animals in the hills. The third alternative, releasing the shepherds and the task failed because the existence of the operation is already known by others. Their conflicts and thoughts and reasons are quite acceptable in debate. As head of this mission, Murphy has the right to decide the outcome and voting is not valid. Finally Murphy decided to release the shepherds. Missions are considered failed and American forces are planning to return to the base, but communication is still disturbed at crucial moments. They want to save themselves by going uphill to get a satellite phone signal. Unfortunately, the released shepherds told of the existence of American troops to the Taliban forces.

Moments later, Taliban forces, with large numbers, raided and attacked American troops. Marcus and his friends are outnumbered, but they do not easily give up so easily. All American troops were killed, except for Marcus, despite being seriously wounded. Marcus was helped by Mohammad Gulab, a resident around the scene. Marcus hesitated because he did not know the identity of Gulab, especially with the death of his colleagues due to free the shepherds. Marcus is housed in his house although some people disagree with it. Marcus asked someone to send a letter to a US base informing him of his whereabouts in the village.

Taliban forces do not remain silent. They keep looking for Marcus and finally they find Marcus hiding place. Marcus was dragged and his head would be beheaded by Ahmad Shah's men. At a crucial moment, Gulab and the villagers rescued him. The Taliban forces went and kept threatening to destroy the village. The next day, a very large Taliban force returned to the village and shot the villagers. Marcus and the villagers fought back by shooting the Taliban forces. Marcus was seriously injured and US relief forces came to help Marcus and the villagers. US aid forces killed Taliban forces and evacuated Marcus to the base.
