Journal of the Path #21 - Goals, Aspirations, Plans - Greening up!
I am Zak Ludick and this is my journal and documentation of my progress with goals on and off Steemit.
So today I had the desire to get more soil and more plants for the garden. More vegetables! More Herbs! More everything! I went shopping around a bit first, looking at all the relative prices in the area of nurseries and usual chain stores that carry that kind of stock.
I decided to support Sandown Nursery. A smallish private nursery. The man there's name is Renier and he lives and farms with herbs in Stellenbosch, so he had some decent knowledge to draw from and I asked him plenty questions. Right next door to the nursery is a restaurant called the Black Bull which is a kind of pub & grill with a large play area for kids. I stopped there for a bit with the kids and we had some drinks before going back to the nursery and making my purchases.
So let me show you what it all looks like:
Here we have the start of the new veggie seedlings popping up. These are peas I think...
This is what it looks like now, after some growth. About 6 days later.
So we have started this prototype hanging garden idea. Water pretty much spills down from the top into each level. I want to improve the design and hang these up everywhere in the garden. Also a plus is that it uses recycled materials instead of throwing away the waste.
The idea is to hang the herbs on the perimeter of the back yard to ward off insects. As the back area is the main air supply to the house this might also cause all insects to stay away from the house... speaking of which... where are the mosquitoes tonight?
Here is my new batch of plants bought.
2x Peppers (Green to Yellow)
1x Heinz Tomato
1x Sweet Basil
1x Peppermint
1x Spanish Lavender
1x Lemongrass
1x Coriander
1x Parsely
2x Flowers that I will get all the names for soon, but they are pretty and also ward off insects!
1x 20dm Drainage chips
2x 30dm Potting soil
The heavy stuff that supports everything else.
Here is where the old soil, new soil and home made compost is mixed together and then put back into containers.
All the kitchen cuttings go into a drum that is turned over every few days and left to rot. Eventually this is mixed in with soil above. Soil from a pot where a seasonal plant dies out is thrown back in here to get mixed up.
Remember the Chilli plant given to me by @therneau and @jusipassetti? Well it turns out that there were three chili plants in that pot! And now each of them are about as big as the collection was when I got them. Each now has its own pot so they can grow big and strong.
A final look at the garden so far, for now only some of the plants have been re-potted. I also had some other tomato seedlings that needed to be re-potted from a germination station in the kitchen windowsill. I might need more containers soon!
Tomatoes and Peppers
More tomatoes.
Altogether a wholesome and fulfilling experience. The kids got to help as well and they get to learn piece by piece this as a skill.

None today. Haha. When will this change?
What did I do to reach my goals? - Journal
Part 15 of Raiders of the Middle Sea is out! That is a major step for me as always is to keep posting and providing my fiction to everyone to read! I commented and upvoted and did my networking. Some of it is just catching up with old friends, people I haven't chatted to in a while and that is always good. Even if it has nothing to do with Steemit or posts.
Trust me when I tell you that to strengthen bonds is a must on this network. People will go have a look themselves if they are interested. Or they will ask!
Keep on Steeming!
Until next time!

Zak Ludick
Looks interesting. Let me know which insects the Marigolds chase away.
Mosquitoes and aphids apparently according to the internet. Aphids eat the plants and mosquitoes eat me so that makes me glad. Hahahaha.
