Thoughts on Today’s Quote
How often do you hear ‘juicy gossip’ and pass it on? It seems to be human nature in some circles. The more negative it is, the faster it travels.
Then, you discover that you are the subject of some of that ‘juicy gossip’ and it moves from something to tell others to a time of hurt and anger. Even a time of feeling shame and uncertainty about your own social standing.
It is a strong person who makes a habit of hearing and not repeating gossip. And an even stronger one who can meet gossip about themself and see it for what it is.
For gossip is people tearing other people down. The faster you put it aside and forget the encounter, the sooner you can build yourself and others up.
We don’t thrive on negative, we thrive on the positive in our life. Engaging and encouraging that positive is a far more enriching path than the path of pain and destruction.
Who is Priscilla Leonard?
Priscilla Leonard is the pen name of writer, social worker and activist, Emily Bissell who was born in Wilmington, Delaware on May 31, 1861. She became known as the founder of Wilmington’s first kindergarten and an advocate for child labour laws.
She was also anti-suffragist who saw voting and other traditional roles as being men’s work. In 1900 she appeared before a US Senate Committee on Women’s Suffrage to argue women had no place in politics or seeking careers.
She became better known as the originator of the Christmas Seals. She got the idea from Denmark of selling a special stamp for people to add to their regular postage in order to raise funds. She designed the first seal and sold them at one cent each with a goal of raising $300 to help fight tuberculosis.
It didn’t gain traction locally. A Philadelphia paper gave her some publicity and she ended up raising $3000 for the National Tuberculosis Association. The following Christmas a local illustrator donated a design for the seal which had caught the attention of people by then.
The quote above is from one of her poems she wrote under her pen name. Emily Bissell died in 1948 at the age of 87.
