“You can’t have a better tomorrow if you are thinking about yesterday all the time.” — Charles F. Kettering

Thoughts on Today’s Quote

How many times have you met someone who does a lot of dwelling on what has happened to them in the past?

Ever notice how those people never seem to move forward and succeed in life?

You can’t move forward if you’re walking backwards.

Spending too much time looking at yesterday is like walking into a room backwards. You’re in the room but you can’t see what is there. If you can’t see what is there, how can you ever know if what you need or want is in the room?

My yesterdays are part of what shapes and forms me as a person and my ideas on life. They will help to drive me forward only if I put my back to yesterday and let them propel me forward into whatever life is going to bring me.

I can learn from the past. What I learn is only of value if I live in a forward movement.

Are you walking backward or forward in life? Are your eyes set on yesterday or tomorrow?

Who is Charles F. Kettering?

Born in Loudonville, Ohio on August 29, 1876, Charles Kettering was an inventor, engineer and businessman.

Hired directly from school by the National Cash Register company in 1904 he designed an easy credit approval system which was the forerunner of today’s credit cards. He also developed the first electric cash register.

He left NCR in 1909 after helping to co-found Delco, an innovative firm that developed electrical systems for cars including the first self-starter. The self-starter replaced the crank system which had led to the injury of many drivers due to its tendency to blow back on ignition. Delco was responsible for the first reliable ignition system for cars.

During WW1 Kettering developed the world’s first unmanned aerial torpedo system that became known as the “Kettering bug”. This experimental prototype was the forerunner of today’s cruise missiles.

Delco was bought out by United Motors in 1920 which later became General Motors. Kettering worked as the head of research for GM from 1920 to 1947. During his time at GM Kettering was involved in developing leaded gas, freon refrigerant for air conditioners and the lacquer & enamels to allow mass produced cars to be painted in different colours.

Several public buildings across the US were named in his honour after his death in November 1958 at the age of 82.

*I will try to find information on the author of the quotes I share. I wont always be successful.

Don’t know about you, but I find it interesting to know who the person was that anyone took the time to record or quote that person.*

About Coffee Time Meditation

I love being inspired by other people’s quotes. I thought I’d start sharing some quotes that inspire me along with my own thoughts the quote evokes within me. So, think of someone, like me, sitting quietly with the first fresh coffee of the day and mediating about the words of the quote. That would be me, or it could be you.

I invite you to share your own thoughts on the quote in the comments.

You got my full upvote! I always like to learn from excellent people who have a deeper understanding what's important in life. Looking always to the past is like standing still all the time. Herbert Grönemeyer a famous singer here in germany sang in one of his songs:

"Stillstand ist der Tod!"

translated means

"Stillstand is the death!"

and yes if you're builted a habit of always looking back than you are often also blaming other people, being depressive and are recognized as negative person.

The truth lies in one insight for me all the time:

You cannot change the past, it's always about now and the future!

That's what i always tell my children if they are were manipulated by negative people.. and there are many in our society.. puh. Even recognized people in school, companies, politics are often negative and pull you down like a sea anchor. Watch out and stay away or simply don't be around the notorious past thinkers and blamers. Withstanding that is a mission for life i know because it's all around us!

If you did bad things, made failures, a thousand times it makes no sense to look back for your whole live.. just for the purpose to make it better in the future but don't waste time because you'll miss it for your future. Always lookin' into the future and be aware of the now is adoring life, thinking positive and design your future is fantastic.

Even if you're pushed back by bad circumstances and bad people you can fight back with the thoughts and the energy derived from that. Naysayers fade away like dust if you have the right attitude, they cannot harm you whether how annoying they are. You take them with you on a different journey or just leave them alone with your positive energy.

I experienced that as i transformed my company with positive thinking. Learned that by people like Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Les Brown, Wayne Dyer, Steven Covey, Earl Nightingale, Robert Kiyosaki to list my important speakers and writers.

Yes! Thank you for the the great lines today and the reminder!!

thank you @onetin84 some beautifully developed concepts you've written here. Positive forward thinking is key to moving forward in life and actually making something of yourself. I know so many people who dwell on past issues and are so negative towards new ideas, they live in a small little space and will never grow.

Great explanation @pathtosuccess, we need to actually think that whatever is done yesterday is done, you cannot change it. What you can change or make better is your tomorrow or the present.

If you still think about yesterday, you will be lost and cannot achieve your dream.
