Hello Steemians

Thanks to @shasta for #moosemonday

This white-tailed deer walked right up to me
while I was on a hike. She looked healthy
with a nice coat. That allowed me to get the
close up shot.
She then wandered off.
A map below shows their range I was.....

surprised to see they are found throughout
Central America, AND parts of S America.

Wow sure got close! Wanted her closeup! lol
Awesome photos for #moosemonday @karbon!
Thank you for using the tag! :-)

Didn't know they range that far south!
Alaskan moose and California tule elk
keeping whitetail at bay on the map!

She was a bit of a poster for sure... lol
White-tail carry a parasite that kills moose, you don’t see their ranges overlap very much. Don’t know if it harms elk..

Yikes didn't know that! I heard about a wasting
disease years ago with the deer in the lower 48.
Those northern California elk are huge, didn't
see them often. One foggy morning tho was a
herd of them crossing hwy 20 in the fog, it was
quite the sight! :-)

Yes there is wasting disease and also a brain worm disease, deer are carriers and not affected by it, but it is neurological and fatal to moose.

Hey @karbon, white-tailed deer are found in South America too. Hard to believe, isn't it?

Yes I saw that after I posted.. I better edit it.. thanks.. lol

I had a book on the natural history of Central America. Interesting one, I bought it at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Center in Panama City. It said that the white-tailed deer were native to South America and moved north after Central America more or less rose out of the sea. By the way, it is still slowly rising.

This deer walked right up to me.. like 5’ was a bit surreal.. lol.. then walked off..

Do you think someone had been feeding it like my weird chickadee experience?

Maybe, I thought that, it was all alone, and not the least bit nervous, but looked healthy...and it was more in the country, not one of our inside the city limits deer...funny situation...

In places where they don't see people, they're often not afraid.

I always found it the other way around

I think we need to go back and find that deer!

Do a study..bloodwork..lol

This is fantastic close up.

Thanks, yes she was only 6-7 feet away..lol

Wow! Lucky you! She is beautiful. Why do you think she wasn't afraid of you?

That was a lucky shot.
I don't know why she got so close, maybe someone fed her,
I was quiet so just curious, she looked very healthy.
