This is an art display at Esplanade - Theatres by the Bay which I saw on Sunday. I was heading to some music event when I saw this and stopped to take this photo. Each of these represent a piece in the Chinese chess which has the same number of pieces as International Chess. One of the key differences is there is no queen in the Chinese chess.

Yes, it has the same number of pieces. Back in school days, we have 2 in 1 set of chess where the seed pieces where one side of the seed is printed the Chinese character and the other side is printed a picture representing the International chess piece. The board flips over to different as required.
