Monochrome Monday - VHILS - Scratching the Surface.
Yesterday on one of my many walks through the Bangkok city and i find this is the best way to see and discover more about the in-depht of this big beautiful city. I found my self walking pass the Embassy of Portugal when i came across this magnificent piece of art carved into the layers of this brick wall i couldn't believe what i was seeing.
Taking a closer look admiring this very unique work of art literally carving into layers of concrete and brick walls left me speechless and imaging how many man hours have gone into this masterpiece and so precise.
I then saw a plaque fixed to the wall giving the name of this amazing graffiti artist Alexandre Farto a Portuguese artist he goes under the name of Vhils and has been a prolific graffiti writer since the early 2000s.
Vhils groundbreaking carving technique which forms the basis of the Scratching the Surface project has been hailed as one of the most compelling approaches to art created in the streets in the last decade. Most of his themes explores artwork such as the struggle between the aspirations of the individual and the demands of everyday life.
Vhils looks at this artwork as him imaging that he is archaeologist, exposing what lies beyond the superficiality of things, restoring meaning and beauty to the discarded dimensions buried beneath.
Maria Madureira, Director of the Portuguese Cultural Center in Bangkok thought she would invite Vhils to Bangkok to do this masterpiece artwork on the wall of the Portugal Embassy , she wanted to offer it to the Bangkok people as a celebration of friendship and relationship between Thailand and Portugal that has been for more then 500 years now.
And if you like to know how he achieves doing this sort of artwork he uses construction tools, he exposes and confronts the architectural surfaces. Etching acid and bleach, he begins to depict the canvas to be de-constructed. Then with the use of hammers, chisels and pneumatic drills, VHILS sculpts the stenciled pieces to create texture, dimension and layers.
I also would like to show you this masterpiece in it's original form of color and also in other various color formation that i played around with with some fun editing.
It took him five days to create this amazing masterpiece. His groundbreaking carving technique has been hailed as one of the most compelling approaches to art created in the streets in the past decade.
