Since we are nearing the Fourth of July, I thought I'd post a fun thread about the American dollar bill! My last Fourth of July post gave some general facts about the American flag, so I thought I'd do the same with dollar bills.

Bills In Circulation

Currently in circulation, there are:

• 11.7 million one dollar bills

• 1.2 million two dollar bills

• 2.8 million five dollar bills

• 1.9 million ten dollar bills

• 8.9 million twenty dollar bills

• 1.7 million fifty dollar bills

• 11.5 million hundred dollar bills

Above info according to the Fed.

It's crazy that there are so many more 100 dollar bills than every bill other than the 1 dollar bill!

Price To Produce Each Bill

$1 and $2 dollar bills cost 5.4 cents per note

$5 dollar bills cost 11.5 cents per note

$10 dollar bills cost 10.9 cents per note

$20 dollar bills cost 12.2 cents per note

$50 dollar bills cost 19.4 cents per note

$100 dollar bills cost 15.5 cents per note

Dollar Bill Mint Marks

The letter in the seal and the number to the left of the letter represent where the bills were minted.

The mint marks are the following:

Bank, seal letter, district number

• Boston A 1
• New York B 2
• Philadelphia C 3
• Cleveland D 4
• Richmond E 5
• Atlanta F 6
• Chicago G 7
• St. Louis H 8
• Minneapolis I 9
• Kansas City J 10
• Dallas K 11
• San Francisco L 12
  

For example, the bill above has the letter "G" circled above, which means it was minted in Chicago, with the number "7" to the left of it.

Fun Facts

• The only time a woman was on a paper bill was in 1896 when Marsha Washington, George Washington's wife, was on the $1 bill.

• According to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, you can get the full value of your paper money back if "Clearly more than 50 percent of a note identifiable as United States currency is present, along with sufficient remnants of any relevant security feature and clearly more than one-half of the original note remains; or,
  • Fifty percent or less of a note identifiable as United States currency is present and the method of mutilation and supporting evidence demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Treasury that the missing portions have been totally destroyed."

• According to a study, 94 percent of paper money is contaminated with bacteria that cane cause disease in people with weak immune systems.

• Harriet Tubman will soon replace Andrew Jackson on the front of the $20 bill.

• There was a $100,000 dollar bill at one time. It featured the portrait of Woodrow Wilson.
  

• According to treasury.gov, the U.S. produces about 24.8 million bills a day with a face value of approximately $560 million.
