I just sent money from Thailand to California with ease! Thank you steemit!

Transferring money from Thailand to California is easier for me with steemit, but can I reduce the fees?

Money - it's a hit

Here's my son's hand holding money so I could take a photo years ago. I used to have a retirement planning website called retireinthislifetime.com. I gave it up after a few years because I don't enjoy dealing with money - especially not scared, broke people's money, and I have no idea what I was thinking with that idea. I did not like working on that website and that is why I switched to the health and weight loss topics over at my fitinfun site in 2010.

Sending money from Thailand to California

My son is still back in California and having a hard time these days. I partially support him financially from over here in Thailand and it is not easy or cheap to do that! My efforts to get enough money here in the first place is a superhuman effort. Then the trips to send money to California are all day adventures with lots of walking, high fees, and no guarantee of success. The amount of time and money I spend on transferring bits of cash from place to place is really insane.

Using Steemit to send money from Thailand to California

Today - we tried the idea of my transferring $25 sbd to him since:

  • he has a steemit account @bxlphabet
  • he has a coinbase wallet from his prior dabble into bitcoin
  • he needs $25-ish right now
  • I have the $25 sbd to send
  • I wanted to make sure we can do this is the future

On my side of the transaction, it was a breeze! I just transferred through my steemit wallet and there it went! But he's not getting $25! Here is his message to me:

"ok mom. So from 25 sbd on steemit the money went to 19 usd going into coinbase which turned into 17 usd leaving coinbase for paypal"

Seeking advice from my steeming friends who understand this money

Does that sound right, my steemian friends? Is there some way we could do this cheaper? I'm excited to find this new way to transfer money, and I would like to do it as inexpensively as possible next time. Is coinbase the way to go or would another service be better?

Steemit is my first foray into this crypto world. Can you tell?

Good luck with your experiment and thank you for resteeming.

You're welcome and thank you! We're still in it unfortunately. Hopefully today will be bring a full success :)

It feels good that steemit making ease in your life. I was really amazed to see your before and after transition, you put quite an effort for that transformation

Thank you! I'm excited about this steemit financial help too. Very unexpected and I'm so grateful!

I lost my weight about 7 years ago now, so it almost feels real. I'm about to start posting more about my weight loss info here. It seems like people are interested :) Thanks for the compliment and the boost!

You are always welcome and yes, i would love to know more about that. Looking forward to your upcoming posts

Honestly that is so cool isn't it? Steemit bringing the world together one cross continent transaction at a time.

Yes, so true. I'm very excited about this :)

I think the easiest would be to go to https://blocktrades.us and change your SBD into Litecoin using his address. Litecoin transactions are faster and cheaper. Then, he would have to connect a bank account and withdraw to it. Coinbase's fee is one 1% and it takes 3 days. Then use the bank ATM debit card. Sending to Paypal is the worst option.

Thank you for this information. We will try to get some of this set up for next time. Can you tell we are new to this crypto world?

I was new a year ago... And still learning new things.

The learning curve is huge here for sure. I have to put the blinders on to get anything done :)

Looks to me like he got killed in conversions. I am assuming he changed SBD to STEEM and then STEEM to Bitcoin and then Bitcoin to US Dollar.

It could also be due to timing of exchanging. It would be easy to lose the percentage he did through exchange fees and short term market fluctuations. It would help to know the exact path it took and I could then maybe make suggestions on a better path.

Ok - thank you! I will ask him to reply to this comment with details. I really appreciate your offer to help but I don't really know his side of it. I'm not sure if he had to convert to STEEM (or bitcoin) or not.

There was definitely some mid conversion because I use coinbase and they don't deal with steem.

First I transferred SBD into bittrex, then changed it into bitcoin there, sold those bitcoins into coinbase and now i'm stuck with coinbase cancelling my transactions to paypal. Not too sure why they are cancelling my transfer to paypal. To my knowledge I've done all of the verification necessary to be able to do so.

I have no clue why they won't let your paypal go through. I have mine set up for ach transfer to my bank because of something going wrong with the paypal setup but I honestly can't remember what it was.

At any rate, if you need to do this again you should change the SBD to steem here and then transfer to bittrex. Right now the exchange rate on bittrex is about 93 cents for a SBD and the BTC-SBD pair at bittrex does a lot less trading then the BTC-STEEM.

Also, you really need to set up a bank account if you are going to use coinbase. Selling to a bank account has a fee of 1.49 percent where paypal has an extortionate 3.99 percent.

Yes i did notice the huge fees going into paypal I more or less am just trying to see if it could be done. Thank you for all your input on this. :)

good job on the money thing.. soon I will get into gear.. lol.. seems there are so many things to learn.. but this is the fun part..

I was pretty excited just to manage to get it to him and have him be able to get it out of steemit. I don't know how I would do that here in Thailand. Another thing to figure out but this works for now :) Once I'm making my millions, I will have it all going smoothly! Love your new profile icon. So cute!

Thanks I drew that as a little gif animations.. lol

Good job! I am not talented in that way at all :)

Hi Sharon! I must say, something doesn't seem right with you losing a third of the money in transactions. You should look into where that went.

Well, he got the whole thing rejected anyway, so maybe the cost will be less if we figure it out. Ergh...

Not much idea on transferring funds. Some experts might help you out here. I'm interested in your way through the weight loss. You should be writing one about the same @fitinfun. Following you!

Thank you so much! I do have a lot of writing on that if you search fitinfun" with "weight loss." I've been writing and filming and photographing that story for almost 7 years now. I'm very slow to get it over here to steemit but I certainly will in time. I really appreciate the push and I will focus more now :)

The weight loss I know - the money is a whole new game!

@fitinfun Will go through your other post now, for sure.

Here is a good one of how I got started on the weight loss, It kind of lays it out.

And this one is only about food changes.

I'll be glad to help or answer questions any time. Anyone can lose weight if I did :)

I read this. Will start following. I have started running recently. Desperate to loose weight. Thanks @fitinfun

Oh! I will be happy to help. It's a matter of small changes over time and don't be hard on yourself. Definitely pick a couple of tips off those posts and start slow.

For me - the biggest thing was to start eating more nutrition and less chemicals. That made a huge difference. But you can really start anywhere - just do not give up :)

Yes. Not eating spicy fast food out of home now. And, running twice a day, in the morning and evening. And, plenty of water. Hopefully, I will be able to loose weight. :)

Good luck! That is a lot of running. Be sure to stretch before and after so you do not get hurt.

And following you. Thanks.

@fitinfun i am a great fan of you & i am consistently following you. I have learned a lot through your posts. I Love your work & you. keep smiling !

Thank you! How nice of you and thanks for your upvote and resteeming. I really appreciate that boost!
