Then & Now: The evolution of mobile phones

in #mobile7 years ago (edited)

Remember the time when cell phones were only used to make calls and send out texts? There was no camera, no Spotify, and definitely no Facebook on those crude gadgets. Fast forward to today and cell phones can pretty much function as a laptop and so much more. Since it’s Thursday, we thought we’d give you a dose of nostalgia. Let’s see how our cell phones have changed through time

Then: Snake

Now: Everwing

Ah, Snake, the game to beat all games. You can play this for hours on end. The goal was simple: to make the “snake” get longer. New versions of this game rolled out, but we still remember the black line on our analog phones. Now, Everwing keeps us busy to the point that we lose sleep.

Then: Chain texts

Now: Chain letters on Facebook

Before those chain letters on Facebook, there were chain text messages which prod you to send the message to X number of people so you won’t die. Yep, we fell for those, too.

Then: Battery for four days

Now: Whips out powerbank

There was a time in our lives when we could go for days without charging our phone. The battery life was that long partly because you only make calls and send out texts. Now, with all the functions your smartphone performs, it’s understandable why it needs to be charged by the end of the day or why you have to lug around a powerbank.

**Then: ** BBM

Now: Viber, Telegram, iMessage and many more

This one’s a bit recent, but before mainstream smartphones proliferated in the market, Blackberry ruled the mobile world. Yuppies then had an essential messaging tool by way of the BBM. These days, you can choose from a variety of messaging apps.tumblr_inline_orxxpot7Dl1szgadm_540.gif
Then: Cell phone “skins” and acetate on the LCD screen

Now: Cell phone cases

Because almost everyone else had the same phone, we turned to crafty ways to personalize our gadget. Enter cell phone skins or stickers you attach to the case. There were also acetates with cartoon-character prints that you attach on your LCD screens. This generation’s version of that are those funky phone cases you can find from Greenhills and malls.

We do miss our old phones, but for sure, we can’t live without our smartphones now. How else can we kill time without doing selfies and checking Facebook? But more important, how can we make our lives easier without our smartphones? It’s more efficient to pay bills and send and receive money through our mobile phones.

I miss those older models. My first was the this black bulky T-Mobile phone. I was geeked up to have that thing. I traded in for a Motorola. Sigh...those were the days... :)
