   Our two guests today became famous in many American theaters during the 1920's.

   Both were members of a ventriloquism show that began to attract en masse the southern US population.

   McCarthy, good-looking but with not great ventriloquist talent and given by the great competition of that time in that sector, decided that he should focus his spectacle on his inseparable chatting companion: the puppet Edgar.

   Edgar, as you can see in the above photo, was a puppet higher than normal, apart from wearing a strange latex mask that gave him a disconcerting appearance.

   "Emulating" a chubby child between 9 and 10 years old aroused in the audience a mixture of fascination and terror: people who sat in the front row at McCarthy shows said Edgar's hands almost seemed real.

   They also said that the eyes that were seen through the mask transmitted a darkness and a void that had not been seen previously in any other spectacle.

   To create a greater sense of expectancy, McCarthy would not let anyone approach Edgar to look at him more closely or inspect him, while keeping him in the trunk you see in the image above as soon as the function ended.

   These facts, together with Edgar's not opening his mouth when McCarthy emitted ventral sounds, began to confer on the spectacle, aided also by the naivety and inculturation of the time, a demonic or infernal character.

   In fact, many parents began to prohibit their children from attending McCarthy and Edgar's shows; they aroused admiration, terror and hatred at the same time.

   In their last show in New York began to be delayed when to go on stage and theater's managers went to call the McCarthy's dressing room to inform him of the delay.

   The door was locked and nobody answered the other side so they decided to call the police to see what happened inside.

   The police, forcing the door and entering the dressing room, found the key locking the door from inside and McCarthy dead, with 27 stab wounds, his throat severely torn and his eyes removed and deposited 1 meter away from the body.

   They took advantage to open the Edgar's trunk and found that the puppet was not really such but it was the corpse of a flesh and bone child.

   No one knows who murdered McCarthy or how he escaped from the dressing room with the key locking; neither is the true Edgar's identity known nor how McCarthy was able to keep a corpse in so good condition and for so long.
