Killer Disease in AfricansteemCreated with Sketch.

More than 90% of my readers will never think of the ailment I will talk about. Most especially those hail from Europe, it will not come to mind my subject of discussion as a killer disease.

I watched a programme on TV this afternoon centred on malaria, the cause, it's effect, and prevention, and I wept for my country. According to statistics, over 300k deaths are recorded annually as a result of malaria. This may sound unbelievable to many. I just treated malaria last two weeks. Such is the case of over 150 million people in my country.

The question is, can't malaria be eradicated in Africa and in my country in particular? Can't people have free malaria treatment in government hospitals since it is a common disease people treat every month and sometimes thrice in a year?

The cause: malaria is caused by plasmodium carried by infected female anopheles. This type of mosquito feeds on human blood and in the course of that transmit this dangerous disease into blood stream of it's victim. They are common in rainforest areas, dirty environment, swampy and waterlog areas. Africa is a good examples of such environment.

Plasmodium does a lot of damages to human blood cell exposing one to weakness of the body, joint pains, headache, high temperature, nausea, vomiting and a lot more. It can cause miscarriage in the early pregnancy, death among children, affect productivity among adult persons and a lot more.

Today, strong treatment is needed to get rid of malaria from one's body. Reason being that it resist so many drugs. Many can not afford like $10 worth of our local currency to treat it effectively. Reason people still die of it today.

Our governments have a lot role to play. Non governmental organisations are trying but should try more. Individuals should keep their environment clean. Sleeping inside treated mosquito net as I do is helpful even though you may not be there always.

America eradicated malaria in the late 40s.
I believe Africa will get there.
