In this post i will tell you have to mine the HTMLcoin, and how to setup a VPS or any Linux computer to use some or the full power of the hardware to mine it.

Mining HTMLcoin

HTMLcoin, uses the double sha256 algorithm, which means as with Bitcoin and Litecoin, it's not a good idea to GPU mine it. Actually at this moment, it's not even possible to mine it with a GPU as there is no mining pools. About the mining pools the developers are working on it.

This means that now we have to mine it using our CPU, ASIC mining isn't possible, which can be a slow process. Every time you find a block you get 1250 coins. As you are solo mining and not mining in a pool, you either find nothing or a single block.

Mining with the wallet GUI

Either way way you want to mine the HTMLcoin you will need the wallet on your computer to get a wallet adress to send your coins to when you find a block

The wallet can be downloaded here: https://htmlcoin.com/wallets/

After you installed the wallet i strongly recommend to encrypt your wallet. This can be done in the top menu 'Settings' -> 'Encrypt wallet'. Remember to write down the password or phrase a safe place, like a piece of paper or in a secure vault.

To find or create a new address you go to the top menu 'File' -> 'Receiving addresses', this will open a new window where you can press 'New' to create a new address and use 'Copy' to copy the selected wallet address. You will need this later if you want to mine with a Linux VPS.

To mine blocks with the wallet you again have to go to the top menu 'Help' -> 'Debug window', this will open a new windows where you have some different options in the top, here we will need to go into 'Console'. In the console you can type 'help' to find all commands that can be used in the console. To find blocks you will need to use the 'generate nblocks' command. Here is an example on how to use the command:

    Generate 100 999999
  

This is typed in into the console and will create 100 blocks and repeat 999999 times. Try different combinations of x blocks and x times to find what is best for you.
If you didn't find any blocks it will look like this:

 [
 ]
  

If you did find a block it would look like this:

 

 [
   "0000000006b9b5aec68faf150e6cbc9ce71653a622f25b977a4835a57498a8e1"
 ]
  

This will not be even close to use all off your CPU power. To use more off it you will need to run more instance of the wallet and use the same command.

How to mine on a Linux VPS

Maybe you have a VPS already for running a masternode or something else. Running a masternode uses a little memory and a little CPU power which means there is spare power. Why not use the spare CPU power for mining HTMLcoin? That was what i thought i got into it.

I am using this script which is made by "cl04ker" who is a part of the HTMLcoin community. The readme on the page describes the setup quiet good. Most of this tutorial is therefor copy-paste from that.

Firstly you will need to clone the repository to your VPS with this command:

git clone https://github.com/cl04ker/HTMLCOIN-Scripts.git
  

Then you can use the 'setup-miner.sh' if you haven't installed the wallet from the official github. I will not go through install the wallet here.
To start mining you will need to go into the folder with the script in it. Here you use the 'start.sh' to start mining. Use this command to start it:

./start.sh
  

This will ask you some questions on how you want it setup. The good thing about this type of mining is that you can decied how many instances you want ti have going, I.E. how may miners. My VPS has 2 x 2.4 GHz CPU and can run 3 miners. Then you are asked to type in your address from the wallet on your computer. Then it starts the wallet, sync it and then start mining. That is it. Now wait for the VPS to find a block! To see if the mines have found any blocks use this command:

./watch.sh
  

This will show just what blocks the mines have found. To stop the script instead of start in the start command you will use stop. Simple.
