I've checked current prices / profitabili for top mining GPS - the results are listed in the table below. For the price and profitability percentage levels, the GeForce 1080 was the baseline (data taken from http://whattomine.com)

As you can see, only the AMD Vega 56 has slightly better price / profitability ratio but it is still very hard to get. From the data above it looks like the GeForce 1080 is still the optimal choice for mining GPU. If you don't have anything against that choice, I will be ordering one today:)
If the funds can get a Vega 56, then i think its the best to buy. If not then GF 1080 is Ok.
I like the 1080. It should also be fairly easy to scale it to up to 3 x 1080s in the future with post payouts/reinvested income. I'm excited to get this going.

A different point:
I am happy with using nicehash or similars
But I was wondering if it would be possible/desirable to dedicate some power to mine a coin the community likes or can get a price pump soon
P.e mine some Steem if possible in the future

Well, the idea is to make payouts in SBD so we can keep everything in steemit ecosystem. Buy you can always send those SBD to exchange and buy crypto you want :)

Interesting ! But it's correct only for today and for your local market.
Maybe in one week another algo/currency will be in top of the charts of whattomine. Price of GPUs may increase/decrease because of demand.
I think you should repeat this math for a long time and eventually seize an opportunity (large discount when a new card will come out).
