Bitmain L3+ 504mh Scrypt miner - Owners Review

in #mining7 years ago (edited)

They Arrived!
Well to be completely honest the arrived early may but I wanted to keep back my review until i had some time with them so i could do a decent review.

The beast has arrived! wo0ho0 :)

Any home miner will know this feeling :) Toys!! new Toys haha

Ok so first we unwrap the Bitmain 1600w APW3+ PSU.

As i wanted to have these up and running as quick as possible i went with the Bitmain PSU.

It comes ready to go with all the 6 pins you need to hook these miners up. You need 8 for the blades and 1 for the Pi which controls it (pretty sure its a pi but please correct me if not). There is 1 6 pin left over which you could find a use. :)

Ok now for the good part!

Ok so a quick bit of blerb about the miner...

Enough reading haha, show me the beast!

It's always reassuring to see something well packed. just makes you feel better after the tentative wait to know that everything 'should' be ok.

Almost there.. haha come to papa.

Tada! There she is, nice and shiny and most importantly... NO DAMAGE!

ok quick check all the connectors etc are all ok and no lose wires anywhere.

Always double check before plugging anything in! There is no turning back if you mess up here.

Everything looks perfect so lets do a wiring test run, looking great :)

Now to get her plugged in and earning! :)

Ok so these things are a little chaotic with hash rates... I am using awesome miner here, great program check it out here

They average out at the right speed but you will see a lot of fluctuations. I have two rigs running and i see a range from 750mh to 1500mh...

As for power Bitmain state they use 800w each. I am running 2 of these and also 2 1600w PSUS.. lets check the power draw.

Wow ok, thats decent :) its always good to see there are no 'test environment' lies when it comes to power draw. Its make or break on miners. Well done Bitmain!

Ok so that's the good part... now for the bad THE NOISE! :(

Man these things sound like a jet taking off!! I tested them at 80db wow... that's a Vacuum cleaning a house!!

Would not recommend these for home mining... just too loud! Ok lets see what we can do...

It's no surprise they are loud! look at these bad boys!

So i ordered some Corsair CO-9050008-WW Air Series SP120 Performance Edition 120mm High Pressure Fans to help ease some of the noise...

Look at the difference! wow.... i hope they help. Ok so the corsairs are 3 pin so we need to 'mod' the connector.

Please be careful!! Check the wires and triple check before doing this. Things can go bad fast if you get this wrong!

I tried the fans on the front as the above pics shows. They were not powerful enough so i swapped the to the output side on the rear of the miner. It works there and bought the miners down to about 65db... still loud.. trust me..

So there we have it my review of the Bitmain L3+ 504mh Scrypt miners. LOUD! but fun machines.

I will post a follow up in a few weeks :)

Thanks steemers and happy mining!!

What are you mining on scrypt these days?

I have been splitting my time so far between litecoin (obviously) and nicehash. I will do a good follow up report soon though with my progress :)

Thanks for the vote @jacobt

very nice toys you got there! but don't tell me you dont miss the old days with the gpu rigs! :)

Haha i do and i dont :)
I learned a lot in a short space of time in those days and i miss that part for sure. What i don't miss rushing home to reboot one or reinstall a corrupted usb, or returning a £300 card because it was DOA and losing out on the profits while i waited... haha

Well you got a point on that ! But the feeling of solo mining in your sandboxed wallet ! and getting your blocks ! damn that was addicting ! heh

Haha for sure it was a fun time, especially when you were scrambling to get something compiled for a launch :)

Alarm clock 1 hour prior, launch delayed for 2hrs or even worst for a day !

nice.....resteem and upvote for your post....

thank you :)

u r welcome...

Pretty awesome and congrats! Please keep us updated on the progress/process!

I'll be interested to see what you get in coins as I always wanted to do this. I have an old dual 5.6Mh scryptminer. How much bandwidth are you using? I have to go solar and wind to do this which is okay but it is the bandwidth that is my problem

Bandwidth is pretty low, i must admit i haven't really measured it...
With pooled mining, at 1000Mhash/s, you'll need a new work unit every 3 seconds or so. Each work unit requires about 256 bytes out and about 768 bytes back. So that's 700 bits per second out and about 2,000 bits per second back. Essentially, zero.

Thanks, I know it is very low compared to most computing and just wondered what happened with a much more powerful rig

It should be very low, as for exact figures i could try and contact Bitmain direct... I will see if i can and maybe add in an update :)

Thanks. About the most I can get in a HughesNet dish system with 15 gigs here. I appreciate any effort because I like to mine - it is cool when you hit a block.

One problem I had was somehow I got hacked several times and my mining rewards tanked to someone else

Wow, this is awesome

Thanks man :)

Really good insights - thanks for sharing your experiences! Keep us up2date!

will do :) Thanks @roomservice

This machine looks so badass... Good luck with it :D

I got a miner the other day and did not realize how loud it is :(((. Still experimenting with where to place it to minimize the sound damage it creates.

I know the problem! I tried a few options and i could still hear it everywhere in the house... You can buy engine insulation for cars, the silver stuff thats heat resistant. Get some of that and build a box around the miner. That will pad some of the noise out. Make sure to have good air flow though.

Awesome thanks! I will try that this week
