How much did the military spend yesterday? $805 million
Wednesday's top winners are four companies awarded a combined total of $374 million to a previously awarded “indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, hybrid, cost-plus-incentive fee, fixed-price-incentive-firm-target, cost-plus-fixed-fee, firm-fixed-price, multiple award contract to increase ceiling and extend period of performance for installation and operational certification...” And this contract modification has two options that could bring the modification value to $500,000,000. Yay!
In fact, all the Navy's awards yesterday were to increase previous contracts, underscoring the fact that the bidding process (in which the low bid receives the job) doesn't necessarily reflect what will actually be charged and paid out. The situation certainly causes speculation about whether well-connected companies with the right lobbyists and revolving-door employees can win contracts and then simply increase the price.
Below are the contracts awarded by the Defense Department
August 8, 2018
totaling $805,685,369
Recent record daily spending: $4.7 billion on August 1, 2018
Navy - $446,023,334
Amsec (Virginia Beach, VA), Serco (Herndon, VA), VT Milcom (Virginia Beach, VA), KBRwyle Technology Solutions (Columbia, MD), MC Dean (Tysons, VA) $374,000,000
General Dynamics/Bath Iron Works (Bath, ME) $33,592,059
Lockheed Martin Aeronautics (Ft. Worth, TX) $19,931,983
APTIM Federal Services (Alexandria, VA) $9,499,292
Insitu (Bingen, WA) $9,000,000
US Special Operations Command - $232,000,000
Insitu (Bingen, WA) $232,000,000
Missile Defense Agency - $50,096,546
Five Stones Research (Brownsboro, AL) $50,096,546
Army - $56,251,823
ECS Federal (Fairfax, VA) $18,699,380
Ross Group Construction (Tulsa, OK) $17,063,090
PAE Government Services (Arlington, VA) $10,885,608
FD Software (E. Stroudsburg, PA) $9,603,745
Air Force - $13,600,000
Rockwell Collins (Cedar Rapids, IA) $13,600,000
Defense Finance & Accounting Service - $7,713,666
Enterprise Services (Herndon, VA) $7,713,666
All this stuff is really insane. Sometimes all I can do is just sit here and shake my head.
In stark contrast, a few weeks back I came upon an article/blog on ZeroHedge talking about a recent study in which it was shown that there are now 51 million households ("households," not "people") in the US that are financially "at risk." An estimated 41+% of the US population is not sure where any given month's basic expenses will come from; rent, utilities, groceries...
At some point, the Titanic surely WILL hit the iceberg...
What frustrates me most is that many people who support the idea of defending our freedoms militarily will give the government a pass on any corrupt thing it does or spends in pursuit of that "goal." We can argue the merits of any government "goal," but when someone turns a blind eye because they picked either the Dem or Rep team to cheerlead is just sad.

So much money for military while the healthcare and support for the poor citizens are scrimped to nothing.
