Just the Right Touch: A Very Short Story
“Get dressed! We'll be late!"
The young man paced impatiently at his sister's bedroom door.
She answered dismissively, “Every time we go out, you say the same thing, and we're never late. When my hair is fixed, we can leave.”
“It's fine the way it is!”
“I need just one more thing...something to finish it off. You know, the party theme is color. I've got my bright red dress, and my fuchsia shawl. But somehow, the effect falls short....”
She turned to search in her top dresser drawer. Her brother threw his hands up in frustration.
“No one is going to notice a little doodad. You're full of color already. Why do you always have to top everyone else?”
“Charles, Charles, Charles. Look at you! One blue and red handkerchief tucked in your pocket. How anemic. Someone in the family has to do this right.”
She rummaged in the drawer while she scolded. Finally, she uttered a triumphant, “Aha,” and lifted her hand high in the air.
“Perfect!”
She rushed to the mirror and carefully lifted an amber lock from her abundant tresses. She secured the bit of hair with a shiny barrette.
“I'm ready,” she announced, and collected her purse from the dresser top. “I needed my rainbow clip!”
Brother and sister left the room—one satisfied he would not be late, and the other delighted she was sure to outshine every other guest at the party.
This is my entry into @janyna's microfiction contest. Word limit for this contest is 250. The prompt for this week was "rainbow". I thought I'd give the work a humorous spin.
