Dead on arrival

With only the revolving beacon of the lighthouse to illuminate her way, the small figure moved quickly across the deserted beach in the direction of the dunes, the waves of excruciating pain which engulfed her body as she lay down on the soft sand, warning her that the moment was near.

Her plan had been months in the making, and she'd been certain she could pull it off, but the eventual emergence of the baby was accompanied not by loud screams and flailing limbs but by deadly silence and complete stillness, the umbilical cord wrapped tightly around its neck.

Any efforts at resuscitation were beyond her, her mind ricocheting between horror and relief as she carried the bundle into the water and watched as it was borne away by the waves, before making her way home to her father and older brothers, her mother having died in childbirth some fifteen years before.

wow! howdy deirdyweirdy! If anyone needs a boost of spirits just come to read deirdyweirdy's uplifting posts! lol. Such a somber topic but so skillfully written! The photo fits it perfectly too.

Hahaha Mr. J. You're such a wag!

Howdy today deirdyweirdy! haha, I don't even know what a wag is so I'll just take it as a compliment! lol.

A wag is a joker, or should I say a person who's fond of a joke. We can certainly do with more of those in this crazy world where it seems everything is offensive to someone, somewhere.

yes Ma'am there seems to be an extreme amount of offense on Steemit too! I don't really understand it all but there are so many factions fighting each other, it's amazing. Can't they just learn from the Irish who only love people and cause no one any problems?

I fail to see what they get out of these silly squabbles. It's disheartening to see intelligent adults so incapable of settling their differences as to resort to pasting a thousand shitty pictures at the end of people's blogs.
And on a less frustrated note, I must say that you Texans seem like quite a friendly bunch.

howdy again deirdyweirdy! I know what you mean about these bot wars and so on, it's crazy to me, I don't get it. If someone says things you don't like then just don't read it. But to try and destroy their earnings? I wish they would take that ability away from them.
Oh, yeah I saw a couple of those where they had hundreds of shitty pictures, or maybe it was a thousand! disgusting and childish.
The Texans I've met are very friendly. At least the men. The women are very stand-offish at first. Not very friendly and takes awhile to get to know them, they aren't very open..it's the first thing we noticed when we got here. We noticed how friendly and respectful the men were and how Unfriendly and stand-offish the women were. The women wouldn't say much but just kind of look at you and size you up! lol.

But once you get to know them they are solid gold. Just don't cross them because most of them carry a pistol! lol.
Of course, I'm talking about country women. The cities women might be totally different. I don't know. I avoid the cities.

😱😱😱😱😱. Dark !

Well I reckon you have the sweetness and light market cornered babe;)

Disturbing

Oh my, very sad. But this is a poignant story, @deirdyweirdy, and beautifully told.

Thanks Jayna. I hope I'm picking up a few tricks from your fiction workshop posts!

Oh I'm so glad you read them!

Nice bit of writing...

Thank you kindly. I was just thinking exactly the same thing about The Tragedies of Too Tall Sol and Iggy;)

Truly humbled, I have no idea what compelled me to write that. I can't recall having written any fiction since being forced to ages ago in school. I will try to do this more often though and maybe I'll get better at it so as to not cringe upon reading my stuff... I should definitely at least start reading again.. Cheers

A sad...but captivating 'short' that I must applaud...

No applause necessary babe, I've always been short. The captivating thing is a matter of opinion but one with which I wholeheartedly agree.

LoL... It's nice to see some of us are able to maintain our sense of humor on Steemit, given the fact that it hasn't been a largely 'happy' place lately :~)

I'd bet that you were a 'lot shorter' as a child...???

Not much. I was a giant until I was about 11, then I stopped growing and became a midget.
As to happy places, I go to mine when I happen upon these infantile flag/spam wars. Someone commented the other day that it was like being back in high school. Pasting shitty pictures on other people's blogs? I'd say that's more like kindergarten.

OMG! The title had me wondering but I would have never imagined this sad, gripping story. What talent you have.

Thanks m'dear. I appreciate your appreciation.
I'm working upwards today. Hope your head is good and I'll meet you in the centre.

It is amazing that my head is good because it is snowing like crazy here. We are supposed to get a foot of snow and then 1/4" ice on top of that!
Hope you are doing good. Catcha' in freewrite land. : )

Ouch! We have a beautiful spring day here, 13 lovely degrees (55F).
We've had no winter at all this year. keep warm!

Your weather sounds wonderful. Glad you showed me what your 13 degrees was; scared me for a minute. No winter? I would love that! We got lucky today because we didn't get a foot of snow. We only got 8" but still...arrgghhhh! Enjoy your weather.

You always pack a punch with your stories! My heart goes out to this poor girl. The emotional (and most likely physical) repercussions from the stillbirth and her secret trek to the beach aren't anything one should have had to bear alone.

Beautifully written and one that I'll remember, Deirdy.
