Interesting Facts about Ebola Virus!!!

Ebola is an extremely tenacious virus. Levels of Ebola virus remain high even after death in dead bodies.

--> Low temperature make this virus more persistent and spread more easily.

--> Ebola virus can be eliminated with heat. The virus dies when heated 40 to 60 minutes at 60c or boiled for 5 minutes.

--> Having malaria and Ebola at the same time may help people survive. In the 2014 Ebola outbreak, patients co-infected with malaria had 72 to 83% survival rate.

--> Scientists suggest that fruit bats are the normal carriers of the Ebola virus.

--> You cannot get Ebola through the air, water and food.

--> The virus is transmitted by contact with blood or other body fluids of an infected person. It can also be transmitted via using contaminated objects from infected persons.

--> Once the virus enters the body, it efficiently hijacks the immune system. Its very first target is a special type of immune cells called dendritic cells. Dendritic cells normally activate the white blood cells called T cells.

T cells destroy the virus-infected cells before the virus can replicate further with defective dendritic cells, T cells do not respond to infection. And neither do the antibodies that depend on them for activation. As a result, the virus starts replicating immediately and very quickly.

As the virus travels in the blood, other immune cells called macrophages eat it up.

Infected macrophages release proteins that trigger coagulation. Forming small clots throughout the blood vessels and reducing blood supply to organs.

--> Ebola virus also damages the lining of blood vessels, causing them to leak. This leads to external hemorrhages such as nose and eyes bleeding. Damage to blood vessels leads to a drop in blood pressure and patients die from shock and multiple organ failure.

--> Currently there is no treatment available for Ebola virus disease. Only supportive therapy and experimental treatment are available.

--> Medications are prescribed to reduce the disease's symptoms. Oxygen therapy is given to patients to maintain oxygen status. Fluids and electrolytes are also given to maintain body fluids.
