Super Bowl Rings: Not Going for the Gold

For the past year I have been looking into various awards, trophies, medals, and statues to see how much actual gold content they contain.

I find it interesting as there might be a perception that all that glitters is gold, but we now know that not to be true.

With the Super Bowl coming up in a few weeks, I did some research on super bowl championship rings and I must say, I was a bit dissapointed.

No doubt that there are some extremely creative and unique designs that go into the Super Bowl rings, and they have massive subjective value based on the tremendous effort and accomplishment they represent.

The subjective value of the rings does not stop at the journey to win the ring, but continues into the materials they are made of.

Incredibly, the rings are primarily made up of many diamonds... but very little gold.

In fact, one of the guidelines for the rings is that they must be made up of

10 karat gold????

I find it a bit odd that such a meaningful and symbolic achievement as a Super Bowl ring would be made of such inferior gold.

As a reminder, 10 karat gold is only 42% gold, the rest being made up of alloys:

Someone should let Russian President Vladimir Putin know this.

If he has known about the 10 karat rule Putin might not have been to eager to steal a Super Bowl ring from New England Patriots owner Rober Kraft:

That’s all I am going to say about President Putin for now because quite frankly, I’m scared of him.

I found one case where the 2000 season Super Bowl ring had a bit of 18 karat gold, which is still only about 75% gold:

In some cases a small about of platinum is used in the rings, but I found no evidence of any 24 karat metal, gold or platinum ever being used in a Super Bowl ring.

Does this low precious metals content have any correlation with some of the makers of the Super Bowl ring?

I don’t know about that, but I do know that:
