When we are on the road, we do not always notice the changes that take place in us, although they constitute one of the essential things of the journey. We have talked about some changes that we hope to experience when we regularly practice meditation. People are curious to know when these positive effects begin to be felt.

How long a meditator needs to experience perceptible change depends on factors such as acquired habits, physiological constitution, self-discipline, perseverance, enthusiasm with which he or she practices the exercises, and degree of consciousness. Meditation favors all these things, so the more you practice, the sooner you will notice a change in yourself.

While it is not essential to record what is felt in each meditation, it is good for many people to record regularly in a diary what they experience with the practice of meditation. We can, for example, write whether or not we feel relaxed at the end of the meditation, whether or not we have more capacity to keep our attention on the technique we are concerned with, and whether or not we react differently to stressful situations. We can note the phenomena that occur to us, or mention other changes that we have lost or that others have noticed in us.

After seeing the same type of landscape for quite some time, we think we have already seen it, tend to observe it less and pass without paying too much attention to it. When we have practiced the same meditation exercise for a long time, it can be less effective, become simply a way to relax and require no effort or energy.

That is why, according to many meditation currents, the student must do increasingly difficult exercises. If we are our own teacher, to feel when the time comes to move on to something more difficult, something that demands a little more. For example, if you have always used a technique of concentration on an inner point, you may want to try the outer ones, which are usually a little more difficult.

There is an alternative. We can use familiarity and boredom to impulse ourselves to new levels of consciousness and intensity of concentration. We can overcome the temptation to immerse ourselves in the familiar. If at first it seemed to us that the meditation technique we use now had considerable compensations, we can try to recover the enthusiasm and attention we once devoted to it before trying something else. If the problem is not in the technique, but in us, it is we who must change.
