Two Advanced Side Kick Combinations on the Free Standing Heavy Bag
Kickboxing Side Kick Combos
I demonstrate and coach two side kick combinations on the free standing punching bag. Both combos are using beginner techniques in an advanced way. Use the footwork to get you in position and make sure each shot puts you in place to throw the next one.
Use the heavy bag to improve your conditioning but also use it to make good habits that carry over to your sparring and fighting.
The best advice for any martial arts training is to focus on making it right before you try to make it fast. Poor form with speed is a recipe for injuries, so take your time!
Combo 1:
The first combination starts with the step out side kick, bring your body weight forwards into the opposite stance and throw your cross, hook, then turn right back into a rear roundhouse.
Be sure to bring your chamber up nice and high before you throw the side kick. You need to get your knee up and between you and your target. It makes for a better kick and gives a barrier before you kick which makes it harder to counter your movement.
Combo 2:
The second combination is a different kind of distance management. After the step out side kick, land in the opposite stance again but this time keep your distance and throw the rear roundhouse, it's a good alternative off the same starting move. As soon as your leg lands back move into boxing range with a cross, hook, cross to finish.
When you throw the cross, hook, cross, add a small pause before the last punch. This broken rhythm makes it harder to block your attacks, it also gives you a brief moment to choose where to put the punch based on how your opponent reacts.
