African Roadside Art With @dswigle And Market Friday!

Hey everyone, have you heard of @dswigle and her epic #marketfriday? If not where have you been? Head over here https://steemit.com/marketfriday/@dswigle/chinese-lantern-festival-north-carolina and give her some love submit and be cool like the rest of us. Yesterday I took my scooter for an epic ride around South Africa in search of some amazing roadside art to submit to #marketfriday and this is what I came up with...

This was an incredible sight, this tin/brass sculpture is around 12 foot high, so cool to see close up and in 'real life' What talent they folks have that make these works of artistic grandeur. Price tag?? how does R50 000 $3500 sound? Hefty but for art of this magnitude rather cheap.

Check out my video here where I featured all these amazing sculptures.

This really is pretty cool to see a real 'taste of Africa' they make everything from the big five to small 'forest dwelling creatures' music instruments and all, all hand made in South Africa and sold at various road side spots around the Country!

To give you an idea as to how enormous this chap really is, if a human had to stand next to it, their head would be at around the height of his hand, it really is rather spectacular to see in real life!

These are life size, most of the buck they create are, Elephants , Rhino and Lions not so much, they would make such an epic addition to any garden, Nursery etc, which reminds me I should have a chat to my landlord maybe he would be interested eh?

I must say some of these look incredibly to scale and realistic, others not so much as below, it's a erm Lion, Leopard, Cheetah? One of those I am sure, it's the thought that counts after all, just kidding this is a Cheetah, a dodgy one at that ;)

The kind of sad thing is these folks literally live here on the side of the road. These sculptures can certainly not be moved in and out daily as the sheer size and cost to do so would be a logistical impossibility. Had these folks not live and protect these they would more than likely get stolen overnight. Sadly road side trade like this in South Africa is also illegal, but no one gives a crap for government and why should we, their fault folks are in a destitute situation after all. I am all for the free market and resourceful entrepreneurs like these trying to make an honest living!

Above I love this pic. A prancing pony in the foreground and a Kudu one of Africa's biggest buck, Elephants to the left and a couple of interesting trees made from wire!

When in Africa do as a warthog? These buggers you literally find all over South Africa and Africa literally from the Southern Most Tip of Cape Town all the way up. As they survive mostly on roots and grasses very well adapt to this environment very prevalent to Africa. I once went with my Mom to Swaziland on a golf tour and we stayed at a game lodge. These were on the menu, very tasty indeed a combination of beef and pork the taste as I would describe it and far healthier than pork too!

These road side vendors really do cater for all affordability levels. The smallest most simple little sculpture as low as R50 $4 odd and the most expensive that monstrosity of a man featured above R50 000. One can only wonder how on Earth one would transport that?

I am so late for the party! Even though I read and upvoted and steemed it last week, I didn't have time to write comments!

But wowsers! These are amazing pieces this man has made. I was wondering if they were soldered or if he used rivets to keep them together? I hate to think of these people that must stay living there on the side of the road so their merchandise doesn't get stolen, but, the alternative.... well, there is none.

He is an amazing artist and you would think that some shopkeeper would take advantage of this opportunity and it would also put cash in the pockets of these homeless people. Their work is unique and quite awesome and very special indeed!

I hope they find a market for their goods! I know I would buy them if I lived there!

#MarketFriday loves you!
