Why does THC withdrawal cause nightmares?

It is 1.30am here in Bali and half and hour ago I experienced a horrible vivid nightmare involving a huge monkey monster trying to kill me. I thrashed out my arms hitting Sabrina who was sleeping next to me and screamed loud enough to wake both my children who also sleep in the room with us.

I have no intention of going back to sleep now because I will almost certainly return to this dream, so instead I am going to sit at my desk and write about it!

The nightmares have been a consistent problem in my life since I was the young child you can see above (with one of my sisters).

I am usually being chased by someone or something: soldiers, aliens, werewolves or unidentifiable creatures all with the intention of killing me.

My father suffered from exactly the same problem and I remember when sleeping in the bed with him how he would scream and hit me in his sleep.

When I started experimenting with drugs in my teens I discovered that smoking weed cured my nightmares. And it was such a joyful discovery!

It seems to cure other things too. If I have a little smoke in the morning, I feel hungry. This may sound strange but I rarely feel hungry these days and actually have to force myself to eat. I am a sungazer, meaning that I stare directly at the sun during sunrise and sunset for periods of up to 44 minutes. And I am conscious that one of the side effects of this practice is an enlargement of the pineal gland which many people claim has given them the ability to take their nourishment directly from the sun, bypassing the physical aspect of eating. Anyway, I am digressing now and will do a separate post on sungazing.

For now I want to examine why I regress back to these dreams of being hunted and chased when the THC receptor sites in my brain are not being fed.

Many smokers say they don't recall their dreams in the morning but this is not the case for me. I dream every night and when I am smoking they are usually quite pleasant, albeit a bit strange.

Research tells us that the brain is most active during REM sleep and this is when we dream. The THC in cannabis reduces REM sleep and increases deep sleep.

Deep sleep is believed to be the most important sleep stage for repairing and restoring the body. Studies show that when deprived of sleep, the brain prioritises deep sleep over REM sleep.

While more research is needed, it’s possible that the ability of marijuana to increase deep sleep, even at the expense of REM sleep, might actually turn out to be a good thing.

From my perspective, it is most certainly a good thing! I am currently living a poly-phasic sleep cycle (I sleep twice in a 24h cycle as opposed to the traditional mono-phasic system of once at night) which gives me more energy and ultimately more hours to work. I usually sleep 3 hours at night and 2 hours after lunch. But the nightmares only come during my sleep at night.

Here you can see my current home in Bali.

A few years ago I went to see a specialist because I was so disturbed by my nightmares. I wondered if perhaps they had something to do with past life experiences. And whilst the 'professionals' did not believe this to be the case, other more spiritual types have told me that my dreams do in fact relate to my experience of previous incarnations in this physical realm.

I suppose I will never know with any kind of certainty what the answer is.

So I have little choice but to simply get on with life! Research tells me that after 6-8 weeks of no weed, my nightmares should stop. But this is not the case for me. Six years ago I did an 18 month spell of complete abstinence from all drugs (including coffee!) and still suffered most nights from the feeling of being hunted and chased by those who want to kill me.

Okay, I do feel a bit better now after writing this, so may try to go back to sleep for a few hours before my sungazing time at 6.30am.

And I ask now that only the HIGHEST & BEST ENERGIES are coming to me when I enter the REM stage.

It is done! It is done! It is done! And so it is. Thank you :)

Wish me luck!

Blessings to you all.

And in case you are interested, the photo at the top I took in Switzerland in 2014, where they were growing it publicly in the herb garden of a Chateau not far from Lake Geneva.

Yes, they are rather more open-minded about this plant in Switzerland than here in Bali where I am liable to spend rather a long time in prison if I smoke it.

Sort:

I find when I smoke pot it kills my dreams off all but entirely.

Off the pot I tend to have 100x the dreams and nightmares.

machete

Take this dream machete and go shank that monkey. Good luck!

haha! Many thanks for the machete :) That should do the trick nicely. I will take it to bed with me tonight!

I read about sungazing some time ago and am very much looking forward to your post on it. You've must have been at it for a while too if you're going for up to 44 minutes!

Good energies for your dreams.

Yes, the sungazing post is long overdue. If only there were more hours in the day! I did make a short film about it nine months ago:

Stress to your mind or body causes nightmares, that's what I believe. :)

Interesting. I am pushing my body & mind pretty hard at the moment on the work front, which may be something to do with it. And I've not eaten anything for the last two days. Which may I suppose be something to do with it too. Though regular periods of fasting is unquestionably good for us.

Thanks for the comment :)

Stop watching those horror movies ;)

Ha! If only I had time to watch films! I used to before I started traveling. A lot! Sometimes three a day. And when I was young, I watched the kind of films a child shouldn't be watching. American Werewolf in London affected me deeply... which I am sure is why werewolves chase me from time to time!

My p0ps allowed my brother and I to watch certain movies we should have not been watching as well as a kid growing up. My brother was the one who was more intrigued and kind of liked the thrill. Not me! I hated those types of movies but watched only out of curiosity.
Funny how I don't really watch movies anymore due to being extremely busy on the grind with my businesses. But the other night I was changing channels trying to find what to fall asleep to and "The Terminator" movie came on, the original! And I was watching it for about an half hour before falling out and what do you know, had a bad dream ha!
I haven't had that feeling in a long time. The subconscious mind is a trip!
Continue taking that medicine ;)

Thanks for the memory from your past :)

And yes, I think films play a massive part in our dreams. My dad kept a big box of VHS cassettes in a top cupboard which were for the adults only. So naturally I would wake up late at night, stand on a chair and pull out whichever VHS tapes were on top of the pile and watch them with the volume low. That's when I saw American Werewolf in London for the first time. In the middle of the night. On my own. At the age of 10. Not such a great idea really. Those werewolves still chase me from time to time and I am sure this is why.

Damn I wish I had some of that medicine ;)

thanks for your insights @samstonehill! I always had those kind of dreams as a child. Someone who chased me in out house and wanted to catch me and withdraw me off my mother. I grew up with no father and there was this friend of my mother who chased me in my dreams. I flew away in the end and he seldom caught me though. Luckily!
Have you ever tried with lucid dreaming, to control your dreams and go at the end of the rainbow? I've never done that. And I need a good pull for the next weeks to get rid of the stress that's building up in my life, due to all the work I want to get done... Give thanks!

Interesting what you mentioned about your father. I also grew up without a father in my life. Well, he did visit once a year but never lived in the same country as us. I wonder if this may have affected the nature of our dreams?

I've not tried lucid dreaming but very much like the sound of it.

And like you I have a load of work that needs to get done this week... this month... this year!

So, let us shake off that stress and as you say... Give thanks! :)

Try eating weed. Ive tried to stop quitting entirely and it never really works out. Weed is like alcohol to me. You just need it to unwind the mind and try on a different lens once in a while. I noticed when I eat it though the high is way less intense and I get absolutely no withdrawals. Plus I can finally breath now and have much less back pain because of it! Interesting write up! Uupvoted;D

Thanks for your insights. I am doing my best here in this very strict country to avoid it altogether.... and the prices are nuts due to the severe penalties. When you fly into the country they always announce just as you are landing that you will receive the death penalty if you are carrying drugs. Which is a bit silly because by then it's a bit late to do anything about it! Well, I suppose you could leave it on the plane :)

Thanks for the comment and upvote. Appreciated :)

I Vape I don't smoke. And I do it almost every night. I rarely have bad dreams but even when I do I just go back to sleep.

I also use brain entertainment before sleep or to go back to it to get into a theta state as I generally go to sleep as the sun is coming out. I feel tired today I think it go too hot last night and made me tired or I ate too much sugar.

Have you tried, praying, covering yourself in white light, asking your guardian angels or ascended masters for help?

Or maybe EFT or NLP or belief work to change the belief you have bad dreams/nightmares?

I used to sun gaze a little. I'd have to start over. You're much better set up for it where you are than I am as I live in a condo and you need to be standing on the earth for optimal effect.

I really enjoy how enlightened you are my friend. I have noticed that there are many who come from our particular industry who have made this transition. I wonder why this might be?

Yes, I have tried many visualisation techniques and regularly ask my guardian angels (specifically Archangel Michael) to help me. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Last night I was so freaked out, I didn't think to ask for help. I actually sat and cried for a few minutes after waking. It was that intense. But writing this article really helped get it out of my system. And today I feel fine. Better than fine actually. I feel amazing! So, perhaps it was something that needed to happen.

The moon is almost dark now too, which does seem to have an effect on me and the children particularly.

Sungazing is one of the most awesome things I have ever done. I made a little film about it nine months ago and intend to make a detailed post on this subject as soon as I have the time :)

Nice post. I did not have so much nightmares but about 6 years ago I had some anxiety before sleeping that made it very hard to fall asleep. Marihuana helped me with this. Nowadays I mostly enjoy my dreams but I find it hard to remember them :D

There is a reason this very special plant grows for us here on Earth. And if used sensibly, it can help us with a great number of things. Including materials from the the fibres. In the old days the British Empire made all their sails for their boats out of hemp fibre. And the medicinal uses are endless! Yet it is still classified as a 'drug' in most places while tobacco is grown worldwide and taxed massively, killing more and more people every day! Madness really. But hey, we do live in a somewhat bizarre world :)

Thanks for the comment :D

Certain strains enhance dreaming and many shut it down. Indica's and Afghani strains are known for narcotic effects. Try smoking a sativa before bed or sativa dominant hybrid. @ganjafarmer approved! Resteeming and following you ! Nice work!

Thank you my friend. Yes, back in my London days I was able to grow a good variety of india and sativa and found myself having to educate people about the different effect of the two strains. But now that I am a world traveller it's more a case of anything will do! Thanks for the resteem and follow. Followed you back :)

Interesting, i don't remember my dreams at all when I smoke. but when I quit, they come back with a vengance!

I did end up going back to sleep last night and thankfully didn't go back to the monkey monster. Instead I dreamt I was being crucified! My brain is completely nuts sometimes! I really don't know where this stuff comes from.

Well.... the monkey monster I can explain as we do have one monkey here I call 'Big Daddy' who doesn't seem to like me as the 'alpha' of this house. And charges me with the intention of fighting when I don't let him have the bananas. Which feels kinda strange after years of never being challenged in this way by an animal before!
