Adding Flavours to Marijuana

in #marijuana8 years ago (edited)

Today people will pay a lot of money to get seeds they think will grow pot that smells like blueberries or chocolate or something like that. In my opinion these strains are hard to grow or may not be as potent or high yielding as other less expensive varieties like land-race strains for example. Often tokers want to know if orange bud smells and tastes like an orange for example.

With the proper techniques it is possible to make your favorite variety of marijuana smell and often at times taste like anything you want. You want to be able to do this without ruining the cure obviously because there is no point having blueberry pot that burns your throat or doesn't get you high when you toke it.

Firstly, do not pour any syrup or similar flavorings on your pot! The sugar will make your weed burn producing high levels of carbon that is very harsh and unhealthy also inviting evil mold. The best flavor enhancing starts when the plant is still growing and will take some time to infuse flavors into the plant correctly .

Also you can add flavor while your stash curing and affect the smell/flavor to some degree after it's been cured.

There are two main approaches, inside out and outside in

You can apply flavors from the inside of the plant while it's still growing and you can also add flavors after it's been harvested, However this is from applying the flavor on the outside. Anything you put in your plants water will affect the taste of the finished product particularly if you harvest it directly afterwards. I have personally experienced this when I smoked some bud fertilized using fish emulsion right before the plant was harvested. This was a move! The resulting cure smelled like fish and had a foul taste when we smoked it. What you want to do is select a flavoring that is organic and very concentrated.

Let’s take orange for an example.

You could use orange juice for example but if you could find concentrated organic orange extract you would have less organic material etc to deal with like pulp and ect... You should be able to find most flavor extracts in the grocery stores for example. Want your pot to smell and taste like vanilla? Vanilla extract is cheap and available, so is lemon extract and blueberry.

Your more exotic extract flavors can be found in stores that specialize in baking supplies and such. So let’s say you can't find any of these and you want need to use what you have around the house or in the gardenb.

If all you have is orange juice you could use that or possibly lemon juice concentrate will work. I would suggest filtering it first through a piece of cheese cloth or a filter to get out as much of the pulp and organic material as possible.

A coffee filter works well but it'll take a long time to filter a couple liters. You may have to change filters a few times. This is why I suggested the organic concentrated extracts if you can get hold of them.

It's important to note this is only done shortly before harvest. For one thing, most extracts including the ones you make up yourself have a lot of sugar in them that will ferment and decay rapidly. Your plants will draw up the solution fairly quickly so applying your flavoring solution one hour before harvest will be enough time for some of the flavoring to reach the top cola's. I have found three hours more than adequate for optimal saturation. You might think it would take longer for the flavor to work its way through the plant but this is not the case it actually will happen very quickly often almost instantly changing the plants smell. All you have to do is let the plant dry out a before your apply the solution and harvest, it's important to schedule a watering for just before your harvest.

Naturally you were probably giving your plants plain water and flushing before harvest. If possible skip as much watering before harvest and give the plant the water with the flavor when it's a little bit thirsty and it will draw it right up. After harvest it's important to give it a good cure because of the additional sugars and carbohydrates that have been taken up. Curing facilitates the fermentation of sugar withing the bud breaking down the sugars giving a smooth tastly smoke.

Resist the temptation to fast dry some of the weed to try it out as you will find it's even harsher than it would be normally because you have added the extra carbohydrates and sugar to the plant by flavoring. It will also have the flavor and aroma you are looking for.

There is no exact formula for the flavoring.

First of all, It's important to know what you want, you may want something that smells exactly like an orange or a blueberry and doesn't smell at all like pot. As far as I know this is not possible. You would probably ruin the pot if you succeeded in doing this.

What some people think is a nice hint of strawberry may be way too strong to the next person. What one grower thinks is very blueberry may not smell or taste like blueberry to his friend. I suggest that you don't treat your whole crop this way while you are experimenting. Always remember that when it comes to flavoring less is more! Other things you could try are guava, pineapple, grapefruit, passion fruit, cherry, mint or even pina-colada.

Stronger and more concentrated flavorings will have a more pronounced effect than more dilute products. You may need gallons of orange juice to get what you want but a half ounce of concentrated strawberry essence might do the job nicely. In short, experiment and see what works for you.

The other approach is to use something in the curing process. People have had good results with orange peel, lemon peel or other citrus peels. This will only give a bit of odor; it's not as strong a technique as the previous one I mentioned. For those who just want a hint of something this may work fine. The technique is simple! Simply add a orange or lemon peel to your jar when you cure your bud.

Once again it's important to watch very closely for the dreaded mold when curing with peels. The moisture from the peels may promote mold if you're not careful. Let the herb dry for a day or two before you add the peels This might work a little bit with pot that's already cured and dried but it's less effective at that point.

all the different tastes are great. I can't imagine what it's like in a good well developed dispensary.

I wonder what the most exotic flavor one could add might be>?

Wow. Just wow. I have been growing a couple of times without ever thinking about this. I will definitly try this out with on my next grow. Lemon taste in my buds... cant wait now. Cheers for the tips !

This is a fantastic post! Thanks for sharing this info.

@rebeccaryan Glad you found it interesting, thanks for the comment much appreciated!

I upvoted this but the system took a really long time to register my vote and unfortunately didn't appear to make much difference for you. :(
Most people I know who use fertilizers or liquid nutrients on their plants spend 3 weeks flushing them with pure water before harvest. I always thought that the flavinoids were manipulated by hybrid breeding between plants and it was "only" the plants' strain profile that produced the terpenes, cannabinoids and flavinoids which is what produces the distinct flavours. I had no idea that the flavour of the buds could be directly enhanced by the 2 methods you have shared.
What's has been your most successful flavour blend to date?

I @rebeccaryn, thanks thanks for the great question. Personally I have had the best results using mint extract and eucalyptus extract. I find it works best if your plants are very thirsty when you add your flavor solution. If using hydro just add the extract to the system before you harvest.

Flushing is always very important and should be carried out as normal, just try and hold on watering for the last 4-7 day's if possible and let your plants dry out as much as possible. Obviously watering requirements will vary from plant to plant.

That's great advice! Thanks!

If anyone has any questions just shout I am more than happy to answer, Cheerz!

Does the smoke get any harsh or raspy if u add flavour- before harvest? I would start with 4-8ml /per gallon - usein only 100% natural extract. I got plants that taste a bit like lemon originally. Want add orange or berry flavour

I like apples the best... Good post! Check out my blog and enjoy the post about harvesting herb! https://steemit.com/garden/@amazonfairtrade/how-i-get-6-cannabis-harvests-a-year
