Japanese Maple Whirligig

The little Japanese maple tree in my front yard has seed pods. When I was little (and even now) I referred to these as whirligigs or helicopters. People have other names for them such as wingnuts, twisters and whirlers. What do you call them now or did when you were little? They will always be whirligigs to me! 😊

Because this is a little Japanese maple, the whirligigs are pretty small and don’t whirl as well as the larger pods but they make up for that by being extra pretty! Here is a photo of the tree that may give you a better idea of how small these little whirlers are.

                          I'm not familiar with those whirligig thingys @deerjay but I recognize the beautiful maple tree. I really love the shape of their leaves and the colours as they change during autumn.

                            Thank you @trudeehunter!! It is their seed pods and when they drop off the tree they do a little twirling whirl through the air. I remember when my siblings and I were little collecting them off the ground and throwing them up in the air to watch them whirl back down to the ground.

                              Oh, now that you've shown me this pic, I do remember seeing them a lot in New Zealand. Perhaps the weather was more ideal for them than where now live in Brisbane. Very clever whirly gig gif @deerjay I'm very impressed.
