Mapping A Tiny World - Sub 1mm Zoom On Strange Yellow Organism Covered In . . . Something
With this photo things get a little harder to define. First, although the image is less sharp, keep in mind that the area being viewed is absolutely tiny. It is a very small portion, under 1mm in area, of a small patch of what I think was a pre-existing fungus on the surface of the wood. However, part of the fungus remains a vibrant yellow, and other parts have turned white. It is covered in hundreds ofo little black dots, which could be bugs, but I think may be seeds or spores of some kind. They emanate from a giant pool of them which is the black mass in the near center of the photo. The challenge with this new microscope is not just going to be finding things, but actually learning about them. I've already engaged four different communities of myco/myxo enthusiasts and the results have nonetheless been lackluster. At this level of detail, information can be scarce.

It looks like possibly slime mold which can be a lot of different colors. There are many mysterious, tiny things out there.
It does look like slime mold - which would be great, because that's what I'm trying to grow!
But, I think it might just be a yellow portion of a an older small fungus. Time will tell - I will be checking back with it regularly and we'll see if it grows, moves, or does anything else slime moldy in the meantime.
Now - if you know what a slime mold is, then I reckon you might very well enjoy some of my other more substantial posts - and particularly get a kick out of some of the stuff coming down the tubes this Tuesday and Thursday.
Hmm, curious. Have you seen a time lapse of slime mold growth? It is quite vigorous.
So far I enjoy your blog, so I'll wait and see what comes out the tubes of next week.
what camera did you use to take this shot?
So I used a microscope camera designed by amscope -its only 3MP though, and lighting at this magnification is a problem. I need to get some fiber optic lights and an adapter for my phone or a dslr to really up the ante.
i see. that's a drag but i want to try doing that. thanks. :D
When you mention bugs, made me a cringe a bit thinking of fleas...
But yea they look like spores, but who knows, you were taking the photo!
Perspective changes everything. Love what you do, keep doing it.
Thank you! I think they're spores - and I say that having found several bus so far roaming the bark, both dead and alive, and they tend to stand out :).
