Murphy's Law is NOT real. Yhprum's Law IS real.

I would guess that more Americans believe in the validity of Murphy's Law than believe evolution or believe in God. For those who are unfamiliar with Murphy's Law it states: Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. The oft cited corollary is 'at the worst possible time in the worst possible way'.

Now, I know that we've all had bad or embarrassing experiences or even unlikely seeming experiences like taking your phone to be repaired and suddenly it works fine - until you leave the shop and start using it again - and I don't want to tell you that your experience was not valid - it was. However, what you are not looking at is all the times that your phone worked and the good luck you had when you were in the right place at the right time or did the right thing or - and here is the big one that Murphy's ignores - all the times that you didn't get killed because at just the right moment something happened to keep you from dying. You might not be able to think of those times, but trust me, if you are human they have happened - a driver hit the brakes at the right minute, some dropping thing landed on your foot or shoulder instead of your head, all the times you didn't get your eye put out by things thrown in gradeschool, and the list goes on and on. We are walking good luck symbols!

The truth is that each of us probably should have been dead hundreds or even thousands of times. The world is a dangerous place. Want proof? 52 out of every 1000 infants born globally die before they are one year old. You were not one of them. Your parents were not among them. Your entire family tree of grandparents was not among them. This is truly remarkable - in 1800 50% of children died before age 5. In 1960 that figure was reduced to 18% and today, it is still 4.5%. We are walking miracles of luck!

More proof. You can read. Global literacy rates today are nearly 84% which is up from 54% in 1980. You have a computer you are reading this on and you can read. You probably are not starving or suffering from malnutrition. You will not die of smallpox or plague. Chances are that you have a home and a job or enough support to not be homeless. These are the big ones but there are all the small ones.

Murphy's Law is a drag and it is a lie. It is less true than it's opposite Yhprum's Law which states "Everything that can work, will work (at the best time in the best possible way). Personally, I believe wholeheartedly - we simply need a longer time frame. The best example of this is the Chinese story of the farmer.

It was harvest time and the farmer's son had an accident and couldn't help with the harvest. His neigbors said it was bad luck but he insisted it was good luck. The neighbors sons were all recruited for a war but the farmer's son was unfit for duty due to his injury. The farmer was only able to harvest half of his crops which his neighbors said was bad luck but he claimed it was good luck and was proved right when the crops he didn't harvest were spared from an infestation of weavils in the silos and then were harvested by the village thus saving it from famine.

The story goes on and on but the point is that luck is a matter of time and the truth is that no matter what happens to you (unless it does kill you and even then on a societal scale there may be long term benefit) has a positive long term benefit.
