Clouds above Crete - Zeus not Jupiter

In the land of the gods

Inspired by the #LoveTheClouds [contest] by @tobetada

This photo was taken in the summer while visiting the island of Crete. A place that feels (most) like home to me, despite never living there.

Towards the base of mount Kouloukonas, along the valley and across from old Psiloreitis - the mountain where Zeus was hidden in a cave by his mother, so that his father wouldn’t swallow him whole.

Unfortunately the photo doesn’t do justice to the land nor it’s spirit; nor does it fully convey my feelings for this place - which are complex and would require several thousand photographs. Each one worth its own cliche “a thousand words.

Καλημέρα Κρήτη απ’τα μακριά! Θα αφήσω τις μαντινάδες για άλλη φορά...

Sort:

I love the sky. My mom always says it’s a sign of God when you can see sun rays through the clouds. So it is Zeus.
For me the sky is god because it is one for all. Anywhere you are in the world you can look at the sky and someone else in a different place would be looking at the same thing. Is there more magic possible? Except the internet!
Fingers crossed for the contest!

So I mentioned in Greek at the end of the post that I will leave the mantinades for another time but what you wrote above reminds me of one, that Psarantonis says:

Όταν σ’ αναστοριθώ προβέρνω στο φεγγάρι.
Κ παίρνω μια παρηγοριά πως το θωρούμε ομάδι

a sign of God when you can see sun rays through the clouds. So it is Zeus.

I forgot to mention that this was dokładnie how the description of the photo came about...

Maybe the most difficult moments of my life was when I was away of my Crete...

Where did you go? And for how long?

Northern Greece for more than 3 yrs.

Interesting natural scenery, but I dont know about what it is zeus, maybe I should look it up on google

Zeus is the main god in ancient Greek mythology. He was able to free his siblings from his father’s emprisonment. He would then rule all, with his thunderbolt, from atop mount Olympos. Along with the other main Olympian gods who were generally twelve in total: Poseidon, Ares, Hera, Aphrodite, Artemis, Apollo, Hermes, Hephaestus, Athena, Demeter.. Hestia and sometimes Dionysus. Hades was also a main god but didn’t reside in Olympos.

ooo ... means it's about history too, thanks for taking the time to tell a bit

Not history. Mythology in ancient Greece. Before Christianity and Judaism wiped out the pagan faiths.
