Steelwool photography.
Have you ever wondered how people get these kind of photos?
Camera | Lens | Shutter speed | F-stop | ISO |
---|---|---|---|---|
Canon 600D | Sigma 17-50mm | 15 sec. | f/8 | 100 |
It's pretty easy to get this kind of result and it's pretty cheap.
But first let me tell you something. Be cautious, don't do this kind of photography where grass is dry. Best time to do this is after rain or you can do this on concrete road.
Let's talk about equipment that you need for this:
- Camera with manual mode (You can even use phone that is capable with this function)
- Tripod (Because exposure needs to be long)
- Steel wool ebay link
- Whisk ebay link
- Rope
- Safety gear (Long sleeves shirt with hoodie, pants and gloves)
About steel wool, you need to buy with grade of 0, 00, 000, 0000. It need to be fine grade because you will get better results and more sparks.
About whisk, you need to buy whisk made of steel so it won't melt because of all heat that produce steel wool.
About rope, you should use something that won't burn, but i found that shoe lace won't burn because sparks from steel wool don't touch rope at all.
All you need, is to tie rope with handle of whisk and then add little chunk of steel wool in whisk, as you can see on this photo.
Now let's talk about exposure that you need to use:
- Shutter speed should be from 10-25 seconds.
- You need to turn off auto focus from lens.
- Aperture should be to about f/8.
- Use built in timer for your camera, so there is no shake when you press shutter button.
- Shoot in RAW so you can after do post processing.
Here is how you need to spin this. I made little video so you can see how it looks like when you spin this.
And these are some of results that i got by doing this.
Camera | Lens | Shutter speed | F-stop | ISO |
---|---|---|---|---|
Canon 600D | Sigma 17-50mm | 15 sec. | f/8 | 200 |
Camera | Lens | Shutter speed | F-stop | ISO |
---|---|---|---|---|
Canon 600D | Sigma 17-50mm | 15 sec. | f/8 | 200 |
Camera | Lens | Shutter speed | F-stop | ISO |
---|---|---|---|---|
Canon 600D | Sigma 17-50mm | 15 sec. | f/8 | 200 |
Thank you for stopping by, have a nice day. :)

Wow, I’ve always wondered how this was achieved! Your tutorial is really well payed out and you describe it where even an amateur (like myself) can understand.. thanks so much for this!
I'm really glad that you like it and that you understood how this works. It's relatively simple to do that, you will only need little to get amazing results. :)
