The impact of travel

You always make an impact with travel. With the trip to it and transport on the spot, at your accommodation, with what you eat and what you do. You produce CO2 emissions, you use land, raw materials, water and energy and cause waste. You do that at home too, but often travel a bit more than at home.

Besides the environment you also influence the destination. Tourism often provides a lot of employment and stimulates the local economy, but it is not uncommon for a part of the authenticity to be lost and not everyone benefits equally from the income.

Apart from the discussion of whether we should want to travel all over the world, probably sustainable travel isn't possible. Do not fly

The most important thing in the field of the environment: make sure you do not have to fly!

Flying is not only by far the most polluting way of conventional holiday transport, but it does not even seem to be an option if you want to live seriously sustainably. Avoiding a flight should in that case be your first priority.

This sounds nice and simple, but has a few clear consequences. There is a limited number of possible destinations or a longer travel time is sometimes required to get there. Means of transportation

Do you want to be as sustainable as possible? Go hiking, cycling, sailing, canoeing, rollerblading, stepping or use the power of your own muscles, the wind or the water in a different way.

Do you want to benefit more from modern technology? Take the train or the bus. Touring cars are more favorable than regular buses because of the high occupancy rate and trains are in some countries a lot less polluting than in others, but in general they are both very good choices.

The car is a pretty polluting option, but the impact per person will soon become a lot less polluting if you have the car well packed with passengers.

Psst, secretly fly anyway? It makes a huge difference if you go less far. Every kilometer counts. The cheap holiday hoppers are also a slightly less bad option than a scheduled flight, because they are always occupied to the maximum.
