Well, I believe self-affirmation is one of the most important elements that we all should have, even if it comes at a later stage in life, it's absolutely fine. Yes, good education and the rest of the skill set will be an addition to your arsenal, but if 'you' don't believe in you, don't expect the rest of the world to follow your lead.

And in my 30 years of life, I've learnt that the very first step you need to take is to learn from your 'attempt' that didn't do too well, instead of looking at it as 'failure' or a 'fuck up'. Trust me, the way we label an event inside our head can have a huge impact on our ability to learn from it and eventually, fix it for good.
