POSTED DESPITE THE BLACKOUT: Young transgressors and identity building. 1st Report: Childhood and adolescence and the expression of personality through transgression.
--Hello, my esteemed friends of Steemit. Despite the constant blackouts, here I am again--
While Venezuela stands out among the world community among other things for its high rates of violence, I fear that violent resolution of conflicts is a very common situation in most societies. According to the media, a very significant part of violent acts have young people as protagonists, either as victims or as perpetrators. That is why I found it interesting to address the topic of Violence and Transgression in Youth.
Young transgressors and identity building. 1st Report: Adolescence and the expression of personality through transgression.
The evolutionary development resulting in the construction of the "personality" is a personal and non-transferable process based on each experience, each knowledge and each experience acquired throughout the life cycle.
Personality can be understood as the consciousness of forming an individual being, distinct from the outside world and other beings, in which sensations, emotions and ideas happen. This awareness of being an individual is established from the first bodily sensations of the child. The I-consciousness is integrated through the incorporation of the memory of being the same person who felt certain sensations or lived certain events; who occupies a location in a family or social nucleus; and who has a project towards the future.
But personality can also be considered on the basis of the exteriorization that each subject makes of his inner being by means of behavior, in which psychological and physiological components are involved, such as, for example, the influence of hormones and motricity, that is to say, gestures, motions and the way of walking and moving.
At the moment of birth, each human being already possesses inherited elements that will determine to some extent his personality, such as intellectual abilities or aptitudes for the arts or crafts. The first five years of life are perhaps the most important in the process of shaping the fundamental elements of personality. During this period self-awareness is acquired, that is, children become aware of being independent persons. They also acquire a priority capacity for their development, as is the use of language.
In this stage the conditions of the feeding, among other circumstances that affect the physical development, will mark of indelible form the cerebral constitution and therefore the form of being of a person. Likewise, the family environment, the attachment with the parental figures, the affection and the values that are received, constitute factors of great transcendence for the conformation of a more or less balanced personality, more or less stable in the emotional aspect, more or less socialized.
From the age of five, the educational process generally begins and plays an essential role in the configuration of the personality, since it allows for the development of the intellectual component, the use of rationality and, fundamentally, the assumption of the social norm. At this stage in school, the child completes a series of steps such as intellectual development, plus socialization outside the family, plus disciplined integration into a hierarchical structure with the presence of an external authority alien to the parents, and finally insertion into abstract concepts such as "nation" and "society", which are constructed in his mind from the geographical, historical, and cultural knowledge he is acquiring.
But certainly the mass media of audiovisual communication have acquired a great predominance and have become practically informal educational systems, to which children and young people dedicate a good part of their time minimizing the number of hours dedicated to reading and writing, reducing their capacity to promote emotional expression and the formulation of ideas as well as for the acquisition of knowledge and patterns of conduct.
Adolescence, which includes a transition phase known as pre-adolescence, is one of the most significant periods in the process of personality construction, since it implies the beginning of physiological and intellectual maturation. Although the variations, readjustments and complements of the personality are produced throughout life at this stage, alterations are produced in the physical and psychological, particularly during puberty, which will be decisive for the configuration of its definitive structure, especially in the plane of social relations, in the intellectual and in the moral.
It is during this stage that the process of self-affirmation of identity is consolidated, during which the so-called "youth rebellion" usually takes place, a confrontation with the value systems and institutions of society. To make the transit through this age more complicated, there are elements in the contemporary western world that lead to exalt and reinforce this situation, generally with the intention of exploiting it for various purposes such as inducing economic consumerism through fashions and brands, and the cult of musical or sports idols; the use of tobacco, alcoholic drinks or drugs, presented as fun and synonyms of adulthood; the promotion of violence and sexual promiscuity as natural behaviors, typical of the break with previous generations.
I conclude these lines for today by inviting you to investigate further on the subject and, of course, to avoid falling into the prejudice that every young person can be a delinquent or that every transgression is synonymous with violence and crime.
