A 19th Century Household #2

in #life8 years ago

A more domestic, lifestyle.

As mentioned in my first article, i will talk and present now the rest of the household of a person that belongs to the middle-class in the British society in the 19th century; and that is: the wash-house, the blacksmith and the saddlery .

The blacksmith

The pictures presented display a typical forge, the workplace of the blacksmith. The rural communities depended on horses for farming and transport, and frequently needed the blacksmith's skills for shoeing horses, or to make and repair iron tools.

Before the 19th century, there was a lack of piped water in the average home. This meant that the washing was either taken to the water, or the water had to be carried to the home from a communal source, such as a stream, well or pump.

From the second half of the 19th century, most houses used a separate room or outhouse for washing, known as the wash-house.

This wash-house contains items necessary for a successful washday, including dolly tubs, washboards, poshers and dolly pegs.

The saddlery

As horses were the main method of transporting goods and people (before the invention of steam power), there were estimated that in 1901 existed a quarter million horses at work in Britain. About half of these were used on farms, but over a million were used commercially, to pull goods traffic, buses and trams or hackney carriages for hire .

This images contain items which would have been made by a Saddler or a Harness Maker. These skilled tradesmen made the equipment and accessories worn by domesticated and working horses .
