Focus less on how things should be and focus more on how things are.

Most people have a focus problem, whereby most of their focus is on the future which is often uncertain anyway. Most people live a life as per a philosophy based upon an ideal version of the way they believe their world ought to be. Therein lies the problem.

Life doesn't work according to the whims of any person, howsoever fancy those whims might be. Life will always unfold at its own pace, with its own completely random sets of events over which no person has any control. What life throws at you at any given moment of time, is totally out of your control and no matter how much you planned and wished that it wasn't the case, it still remains the case and you will have to face it anyway.

One can never have any control over the future. Future is unrealistic and ideal. In the best case scenario, all you will end up with is something that was pretty close to what you imagined and planned your future would be. But such scenarios are extremely rare and only a very few lucky ones are blessed with them. For most of the people, they have to contend with whatever life throws at them on a day to day basis, which is actually good as it keeps them based and realistic about their future.

You should always focus on the present, on how things are in the present moment. Focusing on the present allows you to accept how things are in your life as well as provide you the ability to manoeuvre within those things. And once you begin to carefully manoeuvre, you can begin to slowly take control over your day to day life and, at the same time, make iterative improvements towards how your future should be. If you have your present firmly within your control, you gain the ability to give yourself a chance to make yourself end up with something very close to what you imagine your future would be.
