Hello dear Steemians! Today I'm not talking about travel recommendations, but about the most important tool of every traveller. Smartphones are a part of our everyday life at home, but they become really essential, especially when we are in a foreign place. I know that many of you regularly buy new phones and then sell or dump their old ones. For me, this was unthinkable from the very beginning. They were always personal objects for me, and many memories were attached to them. That's why I still own all my mobile phones and I would like to show you briefly which ones have been my constant companions throughout the years from 1999 until today. Maybe there are a few models that you will remember!

Hallo liebe Steemianer! Heute geht es bei mir mal nicht um Reiseempfehlungen, sondern um das wichtigste Werkzeug eines jeden Reisenden. Smartphones bestimmen mittlerweile schon unseren Alltag zuhause, doch wirklich unverzichtbar werden sie vor Allem, wenn man sich in einer fremden Umgebung befindet. Ich weiß, dass viele von euch regelmäßig neue Handys kaufen und ihre Alten dann weiterverkaufen oder entsorgen. Für mich war das von Anfang an undenkbar. Es waren für mich immer persönliche Gegenstände an denen viel Erinnerungen hingen. Deshalb besitze ich noch all meine Handys und möchte euch mal kurz zeigen, welche Mobiltelefone im Laufe der Jahre von 1999 bis heute, meine ständigen Begleiter waren. Vielleicht ist ja das ein oder andere Modell dabei, an das ihr euch noch gerne zurückerinnert!

1999 – 2000: Bosch GSM - COM607

Well, it all started with this chunk. I remember how funny and exciting it was to send and receive SMS for the first time. Unfortunately, the memory was very limited. You could only store a total of 20 messages, which meant that you had to delete SMS messages all the time, with a heavy heart. Of course, you could also use this mobile phone to make phone calls and it had a watch with an alarm function and a calculator, but that was all, no further features.

Tja, mit diesem Klotz fing alles an. Ich erinnere mich noch daran, wie lustig und aufregend es war, erstmals SMS zu senden und zu empfangen. Leider war der Speicher sehr begrenzt. Man konnte nur insgesamt 20 Nachrichten speichern, wodurch man ständig, schweren Herzens, SMS löschen musste, über die man sich noch vor wenigen Tagen sehr gefreut hatte. Mit diesem Handy konnte man außerdem natürlich noch telefonieren und es hatte eine Uhr mit Alarmfunktion und einen Rechner. Das wars dann aber auch schon was die Ausstattung betrifft.

2000 – 2003: Nokia 7110

This mobile phone was the first ever to access content from the Internet (via WAP). Of course, this was only possible to a very limited extent due to the pixelated black and white display. However, especially the display was a highlight at that time. What I also like to remember is the infrared interface, through which you could play certain games with your friends. In addition, the 7110 was known as the "matrix phone", because in this blockbuster a Nokia phone with the same mechanism was shown, through which the protective flap above the number keys moved downwards.

Dieses Handy war das Erste überhaupt, mit dem man auf Inhalte aus dem Internet zugreifen konnte (via WAP). Natürlich war das durch das pixelige Schwarz-Weiß-Display nur sehr begrenzt möglich. Gerade das Display war jedoch für die damaligen Verhältnisse ein absolutes Highlight. An was ich mich auch noch gerne erinnere, ist die Infrarotschnittstelle, über die man gewisse Spiele zu zweit spielen konnte. Außerdem war das 7110 als das „Matrix-Handy“ bekannt, da in diesem Blockbuster ein Nokia Handy mit dem gleichen Sprungmechanismus gezeigt wurde, durch den die Schutzklappe über den Zifferntasten nach unten fuhr.

2003 – 2005: Nokia 7650

The 7650 was revolutionary in many ways. Above all, it was the first mobile phone with an integrated camera and one of the first to have a colour display. However, the photo resolution was only 640 x 480 pixels and the small memory of only 3.6 megabytes was quickly filled. The phone was one of the first, already Bluetooth-capable, you could send and receive e-mails and even play music files in .wav- and .amr-format. A small sensation was, that the ego-shooter "Doom" ran on it. The viedo game occupied almost the entire memory space, but it was worth it to me - especially because all my friends dropped their jaws when I proudly presented this highlight to them 😉

Das 7650 war in vielerlei Hinsicht revolutionär. Vor Allem war es das erste Handy mit integrierter Kamera und auch eines der Ersten mit Farbdisplay. Die Fotoauflösung betrug jedoch nur 640 x 480 Bildpunkte und der geringe Speicherplatz von nur 3,6 Megabyte war schnell erschöpft. Das Handy war als eines der ersten, bereits Bluetooth-fähig, man konnte E-mails senden und empfangen und sogar Musikdateien im .wav- und -amr-Format abspielen. Eine kleine Sensation war, dass der Ego-Shooter „Doom“ darauf lief. Das Viedospiel belegte zwar fast den gesamten Speicherplatz, das war es mir jedoch wert - nicht zuletzt weil all meinen Freunden die Kinnlade herunterfiel, als ich ihnen dieses Highlight stolz präsentierte 😉

2005 – 2007: Sony Ericsson S700i

1.3 megapixel camera, MP3 player, FM radio, a 3D engine and expandable memory (via Sony Memory Stick) were the highlights of the S700i. The focus was clearly on the camera. From the back it looked almost like a digicam. It also had its own shutter button on the side and the large high resolution display was one of the best on the market when the phone was released. Absolutely unique was the twisting mechanism that brought out the number keys. The manufacturing of the S700i was extremely high quality for that time and even today my device still works perfectly.

1,3 Megapixel Kamera, MP3 Player, UKW Radio, eine 3D Engine und erweiterbarer Speicher (via Sony Memory Stick) waren die Highlights des S700i. Im Mittelpunkt stand eindeutig die Kamera. Von hinten sah das Teil fast wie eine Digicam aus. Es hatte auch einen eigenen Fotoauslöser auf der Seite und das Display war für damalige Verhältnisse groß und hochauflösend. Absolut einzigartig war der Drehmechanismus, durch den der Ziffernblock zum Vorschein kam. Die Verarbeitung des S700i war für die damalige Zeit extrem hochwertig und selbst heute funktioniert mein Exemplar noch einwandfrei.

2007 - 2009: Nokia N95

The amazing 5 megapixel camera, which was able to impress with an incredibly good video quality, was one of the main reasons for buying the N95. In addition it was my first mobile phone with WiFi capability. The double slider mechanism was something special and it was one of the first phones that could be used in landscape mode, as the display automatically turned by 90 degrees when the phone itself was turned. A special feature was the included TV cable, which allowed you to present your recordings directly from the phone on a TV. Furthermore the N95 was one of the first mobile phones with a built-in GPS module.

Die unglaubliche 5 Megapixel Kamera die vor Allem, mit für damalige Verhältnisse, unfassbar guter Videoqualität überzeugen konnte, war einer der Hauptgründe für den Kauf des N95. Es war auch mein erstes W-LAN fähiges Handy. Der Doppelslider Mechanismus war ebenfalls etwas Besonderes und es war eines der ersten Handys das man auch im Querformat nutzen konnte, da sich die Anzeige beim Drehen automatisch um 90°C mitdrehte. Ein besonderes Feature, war das beigelegte TV-Kabel, wodurch man seine Aufnahmen direkt vom Telefon auf einem Fernseher präsentieren konnte und außerdem war das N95 eines der ersten Handys mit eingebautem GPS-Modul.

2009 - 2011: Nokia N97

This was my first mobile phone with a touchscreen. Also this one had a unique folding mechanism that revealed a full-sized keyboard. Opened up, the N97 looked almost like a small notebook. For the first time it was possible to use freely configurable widgets on the home screen of a Nokia phone. I had no idea that it would be my last Nokia and that the time of the well established Symbian operating system was slowly coming to an end. How old-fashioned Symbian already was, I should only notice when using my next mobile phone...

Das war mein erstes Handy mit Touchscreen. Auch hier gab es einen einzigartigen Klappmechanismus, durch den eine vollwertige Tastatur zum Vorschein kam. Aufgeklappt wirkte das N97 fast wie ein kleines Notebook. Erstmals war es auch möglich den Homescreen eines Nokia Handys mit frei konfigurierbaren Widgets zu belegen. Damals ahnte ich noch nicht, dass es mein letztes Nokia sein würde und die Zeit des altbewährten Symbian Betriebssystems langsam ablief. Wie altmodisch Symbian bereits war, sollte ich erst bei der Verwendung meines nächsten Handys merken...

2011 – 2013: Apple Iphone 4

The iPhone 4 was the first Apple smartphone that everyone really wanted to own. The high-quality manufacturing completely made of metal and glass, the brilliant "Retina Display", the revolutionaryly simple and at the same time ingenious user interface and of course the general hype made sure that this phone was on almost everyone's wish list for Christmas 2010. Because of the many reservations I had to wait almost two months until I could hold this futuristic thing in my hands for the first time and I was enthusiastic about it from the beginning.

Das Iphone 4 war das erste Apple Smartphone das wirklich jeder haben wollte. Die edle Verarbeitung gänzlich aus Metall und Glas, das brillante "Retina-Display", die revolutionär simple und zugleich geniale Benutzeroberfläche und natürlich auch der allgemeine Hype sorgten dafür, dass dieses Telefon zu Weihnachten 2010 fast jeder auf seiner Wunschliste hatte. Ich musste, wegen der vielen Vorbestellungen, fast zwei Monate warten, bis ich dieses, für damalige Verhältnisse, futuristische Teil erstmals in meinen Händen halten konnte und war von Anfang an davon begeistert.

2013 – 2017: Samsung Galaxy Note 3

In 2013, in the middle of the big Apple hype, I decided to switch to Samsung for the "uncool" solution 😉 Actually I would have liked to stay true to Apple, but I was fascinated by the huge display of the Note 3, in combination with its relatively slim body and Iphones didn't exist in the larger „plus-version“ at that time. I remember cutting out a piece of cardboard in the size of the Note 3 to see if it will fit in all my pockets. The test was successful and after some people looked at me unbelievingly first, because of the enormous dimensions of the smartphone, this size became more and more the standard over the years.

Im Jahr 2013, mitten im großen Apple Hype, entschied ich mich für die „uncoole“ Lösung, zu Samsung zu wechseln 😉 Eigentlich wäre ich Apple gerne treu geblieben, jedoch war ich vom riesigen Display des Note 3, in seinem relativ schlanken Gehäuse, total fasziniert und Iphones gab es damals noch nicht in der größeren „Plus-Variante“. Ich erinnere mich, wie ich damals ein Stück Karton ausschnitt, in der Größe des Note 3, um zu prüfen, ob es in all meine Hosentaschen passte. Der Test verlief erfolgreich und nachdem ich anfangs aufgrund der enormen Ausmaße des Smartphones noch teils fassungslosen Blicken ausgeliefert war, wurde diese Größe im Laufe der Jahre von der Ausnahme immer mehr zum Standard.

2017 – today/heute: Samsung Galaxy S8+

Even after 4 years my Note 3 is still running smoothly and for many years there was really nothing to justify the purchase of a new smartphone for me. But the S8+ did appeal to me, with its „display-only front“ and its impressive photo and video quality. I am very satisfied with this phone and I think that it offers one of the best values for money at the moment.

Selbst nach 4 Jahren läuft mein Note 3 noch problemlos und über viele Jahre gab es eigentlich nichts, was den Kauf eines neuen Smartphones für mich gerechtfertigt hätte. Das S8+ hatte es mir dann aber doch angetan, mit seiner Front, die fast nur noch aus Display besteht und seiner beeindruckenden Foto- und Videoqualität. Ich bin damit sehr zufrieden und finde, dass es zur Zeit wohl eines der besten Preis-Leistungsverhältnisse bietet.

What do you think will be the future of smartphones? The current form factor is probably as good as exhausted, the displays can hardly grow in relation to the bodies. Was denkt ihr, was für Smartphones wohl die Zukunft bringend wird? Der aktuelle Formfaktor ist wohl so gut wie ausgereizt, die Displays können im Verhältnis zu den Gehäusen kaum noch wachsen. Was die Ausstattung angeht, gibt es auch kaum etwas, das man sich noch wünschen könnte. Welche Features würdet ihr gerne in den Smartphones der Zukunft sehen?
