The Secret To Artistry
I used to think that I was not a creative person.
Until I grew up & knew that I was a creative person.
We all are.
It's something that we are born with.
Creativity is a part of us like our body parts.
I have this friend who is always yapping away.
Let's call him Joey.
Joey is the king of talking himself up & saying how he is going to do something.
But when it's time to do it?
The job rarely gets done.
I've seen Joey give up on projects, businesses & diets within the past couple of years.
And each time he came with some elaborate excuse as to why he quit.
'The project had too many variables.'
'The business market disappeared.'
'The diet is a sham!'
Overtime, I came to think of Joey as a bum.
Sad considering how much potential he had.
He is an amazing talker & very charismatic.
But you know what upset me about Joey?
'What?'
He has no clue what he is doing to himself.
He recently told me that he wished he was more creative so he could learn the art of persevering.
He noticed how important creativity was to adjust & keep on pushing forward.
He said he lacked creativity.
I didn't know whether to be angry at him or laugh.
You kidding me Joey??
You are creative as fuck.
You just direct it the wrong way.
'What do you mean?'
I stated earlier that all humans are creative.
It's just a part of us.
When we are sitting & doing nothing, then we are imagining. Creative process.
When we are sleeping, we are dreaming. Creative process.
But here's the problem.
Joey was using his creativity on excuses.
Excuse after excuse was crafted with elegance.
He had characters, story lines, conflicts behind those excuses.
All a creative process.
You can either use your creativity for construction or destruction.
But you can't do both.
The title of this blog is: The Secret to Artistry.
Well here it is...
drumroll
Commitment.
Yep, commitment is the key.
And commitment is an ON or OFF switch.
Being in the middle will have you on OFF.
If you are pointing towards ON, then you will use your creativity for construction.
If you are pointing towards OFF, then you will use you creativity for destruction.
Joey entered each of his ventures with a level of hesitancy.
'We'll see how it goes' he thought.
That does not sound like a full commitment to me.
A full commitment goes something like:
'I will figure this out. I am going all in. I am burning the boats behind me. It's either win or fail.'
When you commit, your brain now uses the natural creative powers to make shit happen.
In many times, it will come in the format of epiphanies.
In many times, you'll get good ideas.
This is why many people become constructively creative after rockbottom.
The have no choice but to commit, so they can escape hell.
This leads them to creating like a mega star.
I never worry about creativity because I am committed to my process.
Remember: The brain is dumb, the mind is smart.
When your smart mind tells the brain that you are committed, then the brain will obey and start thinking of creative solutions.
But when you don't commit, your dumb brain lacks direction & starts being creative in all the wrong ways aka: excuses.
I don't care which field you are in.
Dentist, business, freelancer etc.
Creativity will always make you supercharge your skill set.
If you have been slacking as of late, then you need to ask yourself.
How committed are you?
ON or OFF?
Construction or Destruction?
Your present day reality is simply a projection of the commitment level champ.
Be real with yourself.
Ask the question, answer it & make sure the switch is pointing in the right direction.
