Day 5 Antarctic Diaries on the M/V Island Sky

in #life6 years ago

We are back on the infamous Drake passage in 4m|12ft seas, which is quite calm for this body of water. However, it is simply a ‘warm-up’ from what is expected tomorrow ~ up to 8-9m|25-30ft!!! Even now, about half of our guests on board are nowhere to be seen, which I am making the assumption they are in their cabins due to feeling sea sick…. Not sure how they might be feeling tomorrow with the stronger winds arriving.

Has anybody on Steemit been in conditions like this before??

The swell is meant to double in size double later tonight and all day tomorrow!

So today I took it upon myself to test to see at what angle and which deck would be great to get a good view of the M/V Island Sky cruising through big swell whilst in the Drake. Well, I happy to report the best one I found today was the observation deck on level 6 - the highest deck you can get on. I took a series of photos so you can all get a decent idea of what 4m|12ft seas in the Drake passage are like on a 90.6m|271ft vessel.

Tomorrow, as I mentioned earlier is the big, adventurous Drake day - hence why the vessel is currently at over 11knots in order to get in front of as much of this oncoming storm as possible. The one thing about the Drake days is that you get to catch up on rest and take lots of naps - Naps are awesome!!!

I do really hope I don’t get bounced out of bed throughout the night due to the large swell that is predicted… It has happened before and it isn’t the greatest way to be woken up from a deep sleep.

Got any questions for me whilst I am working away down in Antarctica??? Feel free to leave some in the comments below and I shall do my best to get to them as soon as I have reliable internet service!!!

Epic shots of the open swell . Love your blog mate.

Nice views would love to see some more! May I know how You would prepare for such an adventure? I mean physically :D

not a lot of preparing to do for myself. I am quite physically fit and work out anyway

Omg! That looks just crazy intense!y My hear jumped a bit from this side of the screen when I saw it. Do you get seasick at all? Stay safe on your incredible adventures

it is a little intense right now but its still only about average of what the Drake can get to. Not really that much it has to be a lot bigger for me to feel any sea sickness

Woow intense!

Amazing photos. I would be shitting myself if I were on that boat.

what a beautiful photos but I felt the cold if I were there.. I loved your post thanks. if you are related in travel you can also visit my post. https://steemit.com/dlive/@steemitci/dd0e9890-1d84-11e8-9f46-298b69155dc5

The passengers are missing out on a major photo op! I have never experienced waters like that. The only cruise I've been on was in the Galapagos, and the waters were calm. Antarctica is one of the top two places on my list to visit, so I'm really enjoying seeing your photos. How long are your journeys?

I would recommend getting here! it is amazing. I am in port now in Ushuaia for a few hours before heading back down for another expedition. Most expeditions are around the 8-10 day mark depending on what trip you actually go on. usually you have about 3-4 days on the actual Peninsula itself. I would recommend looking into Quark expeditions and seeing what they have to offer.

Good to know, thanks for the info. Safe travels!
